***Georgia Tech Class of 2020 EA Applicant Thread***

Hey everyone! I am just getting over my GA Tech decision now. So here it goes:

Decision: Deferred
Major: Computer Engineering

ACT: 33 comp 35 M 31 E 34 R 33 S
Essays: Decent
Recs: Good
GPA: All A’s (lowest grade is 94)
AP’s: 4 AP and 2 DE-- 6 in total (I transferred to my current high school in the middle of 11th grade and my previous school (located in another country) had nothing called “more rigorous classes”. Everything was on-level there.)

Junior Year:
A.P. Psych (I made a 106 on it- 99 without the 7 A.P. points and 5 on the AP exam)

Senior Year:
A.P. Chem
A.P. Comp. Sci.
AP Calculus AB
College English 1101
College English 1102

I am in-state.
I am an Asian (Indian) Female.

ECs: I am a part of the Indian Cultural Club in our school. I compere/anchor for different professional programs hosted by TANA (Telugu Association of North America).

Leadership: I served in the school cabinet in my old school in one of the highest ranks available (Prefect In-charge). I do not play sports for my school.

Awards:
I took prestigious exams like:
Australian Chemistry Quiz (by the Royal Australian Chemical Institute)–Got a distinction
Unified Cyber Olympiad–Ranked 167 nationwide in India

Reasons why I think I was deferred:

  1. Most of my AP’s or DE classes (5/6) are in senior year, which means that they cannot see my performance in those classes for EA. So, I think that they wanted to see how I am able to take those classes at the same time and maintain my grades.

Fall 2015 grades:
A.P. Chem-- 93 + 7 = 100
A.P. Comp. Sci.-- 96 + 7 = 103
College English 1101-- 95 + 7 = 102
Acc. Pre Calculus-- 97 + 7 = 104

  1. My GA Tech counselor does not know that I have been chosen for the opportunity to intern at the Georgia Tech Research Institute (1/3 interns chosen from Fulton County), for I got this opportunity in late December.

Lastly,

  1. Congratulations to everyone who has been accepted.
  2. Good Luck to those who were deferred (decide whether or not to finish the race)
  3. Good Luck to those who were denied-- you have to prove to GA Tech that your life would still go on normally even if you do not go to their college!

Sorry for the long post!
One last thing,
It would be great if someone could create a GA Tech 2020 EA deferred thread!

Hi guys I recently got the email to apply to Honors and the Grand Challenges Living Learning Community. Does anyone know what the acceptance rates for these are?

@graceann My DD is in Grand Challenges and says it was the best thing about her freshman year at GT. She is a second year and still part of Grand Challenges. I haven’t asked her what she thinks about it now, but I imagine it is still positive. All of her GC freshman friends agreed that it was the best part of their freshman year experience.

Grand Challenges has grown significantly in popularity which translates into the acceptance rate going down last year. In fact my DD told me that last year only students who were accepted EA were accepted to Grand Challenges since the program filled up so quickly with students accepting their spots in Grand Challenges. If my memory is correct, 1400 students from the EA accepted pool applied to GC last year. Since GC only has spots for 110 students and a majority of students who were offered a spot accepted from the EA pool, it was not available to students accepted during RD.

if you are interested in the program then I highly recommend you apply. Be sure to do a good job on your application and short essay. GC is an incredible program. First there is the research project that the students do and that GC funds. During my DD’s first year, GC funded trips for some students to Europe (to attend a conference), additional research in Africa and trips throughout the U.S.- all as part of research for their projects. The students have special interaction with faculty including coffees, meals and presentations. Socially, GC subsidizes all kinds of social events for the students, my DD will be seeing Book of Mormon at the end of the month for just $15. In fact my DD hardly every spent her monthly allowance because GC subsidized so many social events (movies, zoo, Hawk games, museum visits etc). One of my DD’s favorite parts of the program were the students and their collaboration and support of each other in their classes. This year GC arranged for a block of North Ave. apartments for 2nd- 4th year GC students so that they could live together as a group. Plus the students share information on opportunities outside of GC so you find that GC students are very active on the GT campus. Gc students can also take certain honors classes with the honors group. The final advantage is that you really get to know the GC professors so they are available for recommendation letters.

Good luck if you decide to apply.

@southeastkid called admissions today and the person said you don’t need to send mid-year reports if you’ve been accepted

How about GT’s computer science? Is it easy to get internship?
By the way, which kind of scholarship is available to OOS, except President’s Scholar?
Is it required to apply Grand Challenge or Honor Program to apply scholarship?

@Maple2020 - I don’t quiet understand your question about Grand Challenges and Honors Program. There are no scholarships associated with those programs other than a few given at the end of the first year (student selected as the “best student” kind of thing). My DD told me that some of her fellow Grand Challenge students were also President/Stamps Scholars (I think 10 of them).

GT offers the Provost Scholarship to OOS. There is also the Goldbud (sounds like it) and a few others. There is a FIRST Robotics scholarship too as well as scholarships from local GT alumni clubs (my DD received one of those). If you go to the financial aid website, it lists the scholarships available to OOS. The number is not a lot. However some ways of making GT affordable for OOS is to do study abroad (you pay instate tuition rates which saves a lot) and money earned during internships/co-ops which can be used to pay for tuition. Financial Aid to OOS is pretty terrible and usually consists of just loans.

As far as internships for CS- this is one of GT’s greatest strength’s in my opinion. GT students are highly sought after for co-ops and internships. I know my DD’s friends were are CS all have internships/co-ops. If you get a chance, contact the Career Center and ask about the list of companies seeking CS students. When my DD was looking for a position last semester, I remember seeing a ton of postings for CS majors.

95% of accepted students have taken Calculus. Also, GT seems very interested in what you have done in your community and the world–GT motto is progress and service. I think that is the difference along with writing really personal, heart- felt essays. When everyone has great test scores and GPA’s its the other stuff that makes the difference. Accepted ED/ Math In state.

If we only got an email today about Grand Challenges and the Honors Program, does that mean we didn’t qualify for the President’s Scholarship Program?

For those already submitted the Deferred Supplimental Form, after you hit submit is there a sign or green check somewhere to show that you already submitted it properly? S hit submit yesterday but he has not noticed any update/sign/check list in his Buzzport that shows DSF has been successfully submitted. I just thought I can count on you guys at CC for answer!
Thanks!

Thank you for your information.

Rejected OOS (CS).

So disappointed:
ACT 35C 36M 33E 36S 35R, 15 APs, SAT II M800, Phy760 USH 740

Was expecting for ‘graceful’ deferred. Hopefully they could send an explanation. :frowning:

So relieved:
No need struggle for huge tuition.

@Indijat I dont get it…did u get in?

@Xboxgamegirl I have just applied for regular action!!!

Somebody please help me with this!!-
I have been deferred from purdue mechanical engineering and they say they want more information…
And in my status they are asking for most recent scores which I mentioned in my common app but didn’t send!!
And it sucks to have got the exact same score next time!!

What should I do guys??

ThanXXxxXX

@Indijat - Have you taken the ACT to see if any changes/improvements in your breakdown scores are achieved as compared to SAT?

@IfnousWHO
I took the ACt. It was much easier but I couldn’t get better marks as I didn’t have any time to prepare for it due to heavy application load!!

I’ll suggest taking ACT when you struggle with accuracy but are speedy!!

Hey when do admission packets typically show up at our houses?

@Fireball99 They usually arrive about two weeks after a decision. There is a very small group where the admissions office delivers them directly to the students. It is sort of a “surprise we are here” thing.

For all EA applicants and who were accepted, don’t forget to apply for housing now. I believe the application is open now and you want to apply as soon as possible. Although all housing is guaranteed for freshman if they deposit by May 1, the earlier you apply means that you will be more likely to get your first choice in housing. A couple of years ago, GT experienced higher yield than they were expecting so about 100-200 freshman were not placed in the freshman experience housing and in less desireable locations.

There are a ton of threads on this forum discussing the different types of housing options so do a search before you ask the same questions. Freshman live on either West or East Campus. It is believed West is quieter, frankly I have been on East when I have visited my DD and it has been pretty quiet. To me the big difference is that East is near Tech Square, there are two dining halls (Britten and North) and you are near the Greek Row. My DD who is not a partier enjoyed living on East. West is closer to the CRC so if you like to work out a ton then that would be a good location for you.

I highly recommend being part of the Freshman Experience program. It doesn’t cost anything extra and you will really get to know your freshman class and accordingly I believe adjust better to college. Many of the dorms have freshman experience in them so look for that. One thing to know is that freshman dorms at Georgia Tech are small rooms. However all dorms have lounges and many have tv rooms and workout rooms.
