The test scores don’t determine whether or not you get in. The director of admissions has publicly stated that Georgia Tech does not feel test scores are a good way to judge applicants. This does not mean that you should get a 1000 on the SAT, but really as long as you are above 1300 you are fine. Now since Georgia Tech is a STEM school, things such as 800 Math and 36 Math/Science on those tests could make you stand out more. If you don’t believe me, there is a livestream on facebook showing the director of undergraduate admissions saying what I just said.
One of my school counselors had mentioned once that some schools do not give much weightage to SAT scores and see if a student has consistently worked hard throughout the high school years. Because SAT is after all an endurance test which goes on and on and some kids are just great test takers. But when they see consistent performance in school, but not a great SAT, they may still consider the applicant… this may or may not be true, but feels good to know!
For class 2020, The decisions were released in Mid December. Early January for Class 2023
Does GT accept by major or by college? Meaning I applied for Chemical Engineering. Would I get admission as Chemical Engineering for Engineering School?
All engineering students take FYE program and then petition for their chosen engineering area. Not everyone gets what the wanted, though many, if not most, do. This is something to take into consideration with acceptances. If you have another school where you have been accepted as a Chem Engineering major, that may be a better option than hoping for the major at GT. Or you could be confident enough that your GPA will be great in those FYE classes and you will get your first choice. Decisions…
@mexusa so its General Engg for first year and then they have to compete for their major? Like in Purdue?

This is terrible information (no offense), GT does not admit by major for any program. Students are accepted to the Institute. This fact is proven because students get one free major change after fall semester drop day.
thanks,
I see UIUC and UWisconsin Madison admit by major.
so, you don’t need to apply for the major in sophomore.
But in GT/UMich/Purdue you have to apply in sophomore.
Schools admit not by major, will have weedout classes mostly. (its my opinion).
Is that TRUE?
Regardless of how a school defines engineering majors in their freshman year, they are all taking pretty much the same courses in the first year anyway. Purdue only admits you to general engineering, but Georgia Tech admits you to whatever major you put on your application. This major can be changed pretty smoothly, as long as its a reasonable change. You can’t apply as an econ major and then switch to comp sci with ease.
Again…this is not true. GT does not accept by major. When you are admitted, you can change your major to whatever you want, after the appropriate period (drop day, fall semester). The first major change has no conditions, there may or may not be conditions after the first change (likely not). There are no “reasonable” or “unreasonable” major changes and yes, you could apply as an econ major and switch to CS with ease. Would you be admitted into GT with an econ major on your app but with all CS ECs and interest is another question. But once you’re in, you are in for any major.
Summary. Tech admits you to the institute, a college (eng, computing) and to a requested major… which you can easily change… Multiple times.
So you are saying that I can get accepted as a nursing major and then switch into biomedical engineering at one of the best engineering schools in the world? Thats called playing the system, and theyll know when you are trying to do that. Thats like getting into MIT for culinary arts and then trying to switch into the business school.
Seeing as how GT doesn’t have a nursing major, you would probably be found it well before enrolling. Who knows if things will change, but at this point they are not admitting by college or major. The majority of people who apply do so in good faith. If a few people choose to “game the system” as you call it, that’s on them.
Nursing was just an example of a major that Georgia Tech is not well recognized for, so what I really meant to say was a weaker and less competitive major. You are correct in saying that you are not admitted by major, but you are admitted through the lens of your major, meaning that if all of your activities and high school classes are directed towards economics, then you should put down economics on common app for the primary major. If you show up and try to switch from econ to computer science, which is much more selective since there are so many comp sci applicants, then thats when things start to get sketchy.
Still not sure of your point. Things don’t get “sketchy.” The vast majority of people apply in good faith. Whether or not people do, students are not accepted into a major and can change major once enrolled and after the appropriate period.
@heir2301 and @Greymeer - confused as both the posts are contradicting. If we list CS as a major and get admission to GTech - we can then enroll for classes pertained to that major right? I am not asking about change of major but direct admission to a major. Maintaining the GPA to continue and stay track is same for all colleges I guess. But there are amny colleges that only says General engg for freshmen. Can you confirm if we get a direct admission to the major in Gtech?
^ Yes you get direct admission.
“Tech admits you to the institute, a college (eng, computing) and to a requested major.”
applying for meche OOS
1450 SAT
4.4 W/3.7 UW GPA
i’m not feeling so good…OOS from what i’v seen is very competitive
The admissions process goes far beyond GPA and test scores.
Could anyone chance me?
White female, OOS - Biomedical Engineering EA
GPA W (4.783/4.0) - they don’t calculate unweighted, but self-calculated is around 3.97, only 2 semester Bs and took a lot of classes
Class rank is also not given, but I would guess the top 3%, class of 650 students
SAT: 1580 (790 both)
Seal of Biliteracy in Spanish (advanced in all categories, but not spoken at home)
APs:
10th grade - Macro(5), Statistics(5), US GoPo(4)
11th grade - Physics(3 :/), English Lang(4), Calc BC(5), AB Subscore(5)
12th grade - Computer Science A(TBD), Biology(TBD), Spanish Lang(TBD)
12th grade classes:
AP Computer Science A
AP Biology
AP Spanish Language and Culture
Dual Credit - Composition 101, Technical Writing H (both 1 semester honors classes)
Dual Credit - Multivariable Calculus
Constitutional Law Honors (1 semester - decided to take this because the teacher is fun)
Kind of weak on my senior year schedule, but I wanted to avoid the depressing, loaded schedule of my junior year
Awards:
National Merit Commended Student
Received an Exemplary Youth Service Award from my town for my work at our school tutor center
Spanish Honors Society
National Honors Society
Tutor of the Month - included this because it is important to me, even if it’s not an “amazing achievement”
Activities:
My ECs are not that great or "stand-out"ish, but they are all things that I am passionate about and have been committed to for many years.
Soccer since I was 3 years old, and have played on the same club team with the same players for 12 years (also high school soccer for all 4 years as well)
Club hockey (Co-ED) for 7 years, then started playing in a local co-ed YMCA league for 2 years in high school
Peer Tutoring all 4 years of high school, I volunteer at our school tutor center 3 hrs/day, 15 hrs/week (honestly coming close to a part-time job at this point lol, and I have a large informal leadership there as well)
I also spend a lot of time tutoring my younger sister, usually a couple hours a night, a few days a week
Designing and customizing skateboards (more of a hobby, but I included it because I spend a lot of time on this and enjoy it a lot)
Large leadership role as a Freshman Mentor for two years at my high school
Anyway if anyone would chance me, that would b great. The biomedical engineering program at Tech is literally one of the best in the world, so I have pretty low expectations about getting in.
It doesn’t have anything to do w/ my chances at GT, but I was accepted to UIUC bioengineering as well. The only thing is UIUC is so expensive (esp bc Illinois instate sucks) so I was really hoping for Tech.
