Thank you for the good explanation.
Any idea when in June our students will receive email about staying on waitlist
Is anyone hearing any updates??
We have kept this in the back burner and fully moved on, with the committed collegeās online placement tests, sending AP/IB scores, orientation, course selections, etc. In addition, if your OOS committed college is in a small town (like UIUC, Purdue), definitely one is already late if hotel bookings are not done yet. So better to move on now.
Good points.
Would any students try to transfer?
Yeah I would. Does anyone have an idea what the transfer acceptance rate is for international students?
Do you think any more students will hear before July?
I know Iām a little late to this conversation, but I wanted to share in case it helps anyone. Our daughter was deferred EA1 (weāre in state), waitlisted at Regular Decision & then offered a spot in the Georgia Tech Class of 2025 on May 6thā¦ which she declined. Between RD & coming off the waitlist, she had a lot of time to think about things like fit, size, location, academics, etc. between Georgia Tech & her ā2nd choiceā. Turns out, the other school was the best school for her. By the time she heard from Tech she had deposited, found roommates, attended Admitted Students Day & felt engaged. That school was no longer a runner-up to Tech in her mind. Being on the waitlist is an awful feeling b/c youāre suspended from moving forward. If youāre still waiting, start the process with your backup school & it will help. Who knows? Maybe you will end up being really happy with that decision whether you ultimately come off the waitlist or not. I think students (my daughter included) get caught up in the āGeorgia Techā mystique, thinking itās the only school they want to go to. It is a great school, it is prestigious, it is highly selective, but in the end, the best school in the country is the school that is best for YOU.
Very well said. We are feeling the same way with my son all geared up for his committed school, having chosen his room mate, completed the placement exam, on the way to complete orientation, and finally getting all excited about it. It will not be easy to turn him around.
If I donāt get off the waitlist, Iām hoping to transfer to GT. How can I get help make sure Iām on the right track to be able to transfer? On GTās transfer site, it says that they cannot help with that, can my advisor at the college Iāve committed to help me?
Are they going to offer a transfer pathway once the waitlist is closed for waitlisted students?
Some will receive a pathway but only if they fall into a Pathway category. Most engineering or CS majors donāt qualify unless they are a legacy or child of employee, first generation, or APS I think.
You need to look at the transfer equivalency table for your university on the GeorgiaTech website as well as the transfer requirements for your particular major to be sure the classes that you take will qualify. They are very specific about what you need so be sure to register for the correct classes.
we are legacy so we will receive the conditional pathway when the waitlist is closed officially?
Also, will they guide us into which classes?
https://admission.gatech.edu/transfer/transfer-pathway-programs
Applicants who are not offered first-year admission and have a family member (grandparent, parent, sibling, or Tech employee) affiliated with Georgia Tech at the point of application may be given the opportunity to apply as a transfer student through the Conditional Transfer Pathway Program. This program is for previous year first-year applicants only.
First-year applicants for the fall 2021 term not offered first-year admission may be given the opportunity to apply as a transfer student for the summer 2022 term through the Conditional Transfer Pathway. This pathway is for the summer 2022 term only.
Do you think it is hard to
Come in as a transfer socially?
Depends on the person I am sure but a child from my kids high school transferred in, lived off campus and never really found his people. Covid didnāt help either. He is racing to get out as fast as he can. A transfer student is going to have to make extra effort for sure but many successfully transfer.
From what I understand they will not help you at GT other than pointing you to the transfer requirements for your major and the transfer tables. Of course, this is even another reason to move forward with your deposited school at the earliest possible juncture (vs waiting to register, etc) as you will need to have certain classes to transfer. I have heard of issues at some school in getting the necessary transfer classes.
