Not specifically but I did see Rick Clark comment on Twitter that the Georgia Tech waitlist is still in play, they have accepted a little over 200 people already, and are holding onto it because of melt. He said the biggest piece was international particularly India and Brazil. Sounds like that is something that won’t be known for at least a month. I would think it would be pretty difficult to get some kids to change course at that point (worst dorm, late to register, may have a roommate and great dorm at first college, etc.) unless they are planning on transferring anyway.
I agree with everything you say, per usual, but I think there is always some kid that will change course no matter what, thinking that it is no big deal, when it is. They then end up with the bottom of the barrel for everything. As you said, worst dorm, worst classes (or not any classes they want), miss summer orientation (for schools that have it), don’t get to pick a roommate, let down a roommate they previously picked at a different school and more. At Michigan today was the day for freshman to purchase sports tickets. While it was a cluster for getting them as they went on sale at 8:30EST, and people on the West coast had to get up at 5:30, the site kept crashing and I think some people won’t get basketball as they will sell out and football shortly thereafter if not today. Hockey I’m not sure sells out, but it’s a hot ticket nonetheless. So that’s another thing a transfer can miss out on at schools. The huge social scene of sports. Not saying at GaT that is an issue, but in general.
At some point people need to really focus their attention on the school they deposited with. They may realize it is a great school for them if they give it a chance. Why else then did they even apply in the first place?
This just arrived in my inbox and gives some insight into this whole process. Rick Clark is great, as usual! Georgia Tech Admission Blog – A dialogue on college admission
Agree. Missing out on sports at Michigan would be a big deal for either of my sons. They would care more about that than the bad dorm and bad classes!
The one thing I can see being a material factor in the switch is those on waitlists at highly ranked state schools who are in state - just for the money reason alone. That was a big factor in my GT son not choosing Michigan (he spent two weeks there in an engineering camp the summer before his senior year and loved everything about it). Of course, had he committed to Michigan he would have gone all in like your son and would not have switched to GT, even in state in all likelihood. I would think international offers are likely off the table unless the student is in the US already, particularly with the mention of international instability in the above blog post. Wondering if in state offers might prevail from now on, particularly those given out in July or heaven forbid August!
He is great and one reason why? He’s actually honest, unlike so many others who claim to be “experts” and are now scrambling to cover their asses. Notice he didn’t pull the they double dipped. He agrees with many of us that the schools accepted more this year and have higher yields than they expected. He also stated what most of us have now realized, that tons of kids were put on a lot of waitlists because schools had huge waitlists to cover their butts and then aren’t releasing them, but at the same time giving way too many students false hope.
Interesting how there weren’t huge decreases in the number of apps anywhere, but the increases were substantial and that’s no doubt where a lot of the kids were headed.
In GT case, I do think they monitored their acceptances carefully and didn’t over accept in the RD round which then helped them accept more from their waitlist.
Spot on.
He’s definitely all in, lol. And they just keep on nickel and diming us. UT charges one fee for the sports for the year and it’s cheap. You just only don’t get VB. UM it was one cost for each FB, BB, and Hockey. Of course for my other one we pay for no sports except hockey but even that it’s cheaper to just pay per game ($10) because I know she is definitely not going to every hockey game. lol
But you’re right. The financials at this point and logistics for most I think are a factor and unless it’s someone close by I’m not sure where people will be coming from off waitlists but if you’re the school, you can offer someone the acceptance and they can always decline and you just move on. It doesn’t really affect anyone else.
As for the internationals, obviously Brazil and India are huge problems right now, and I’m not even sure what the travel situations are with them, but in many cases, the wealthier international families already have the visa situations worked out. It again of course falls to the others that may not be able to get visa sorted out or the financial aid needed, but then they may just go into the next year’s class impacting them. Thank god we aren’t going through this again. I couldn’t imagine.
Do you think certain majors are more likely to come off of the waitlist?
Have any of your students received a June email about staying on waitlist?
Nope
Do you think if any other offers come from waitlist it will be starting fall semester in France?
Read on the CC forum of UCLA. Today there was a wave for L&S bio, pre-psychology, etc at UCLA. So there may be possibilities of WLs moving.
We can all hope
Has anyone heard of any more movement on gt waitlist?
GT mentioned earlier that in June we should hear more. We are entering the last week of June. Anyone, any clue or rumors on the grapevine?
From what I have gathered from reading the tea leaves, Georgia Tech is full. They have some predicted melt which they have not met yet, so no need to take anyone off the waitlist right now. International students are still a question, so depending on the numbers of international admitted students not already in the US who cannot get a visa, there may or may not be some admitted later in the summer when these numbers are known. Highly unlikely to get off as an international student due to visa questions. Not promising for others, particularly since they have already taken more than 240 but waitlist is not closed.
@VirginiaBelle - you seem to have lots of good information & I appreciate your insights. I wanted to be able to chat with a parent for my younger kids college options and how to do it better next time (as I was a counselor for my oldest and its been a roller coaster of emotions in the last many months).
Any of the experienced parents willing to chat, please PM me…I want to be more prepared for my next kid (who will be a sophomore next year).
Hello everyone, I am wondering there is more chances to get off waitlist still or not.
GT Admission announced they will inform about final clearance to say Yes to accept or Closed in June and its July already.
Has anyone heard of more movement on gt waitlist?
Has anyone heard if the waitlist has moved recently
hi guys. i just received an email that i was accepted into georgia tech so there is still movement happening.
Congratulations! Where are you committed right now? Are you going to stay there or go toGT?
