Has anyone received their award letters for Freshman Class 2009?

Not here…am waiting and checking Buzzport every day. Called and call was not returned.

Join the crowd. I’m anxiously awaiting the letter and checking BuzzPort daily.

I hope they come out soon because its down to GaTech or my state school and at this point I’d just like to know which school I’ll be attending so I can get in the right mindset.

None received here in Memphis - and Saturday’s mail just came :(

None either in Birmingham…mail has already come.

Well got it today but what a joke. Thanks for not much.

How lavish is Georgiatech with regards to financial aid for international applicants(Annual family income less than 20-25K)
Is it need-blind?

My son got his yesterday. Yes, a joke. I think GA Tech makes their funding off out of state students.

Gary

No. GT is not need blind, especially for out of state students.

Well, to be fair, GT is funded by the state of Georgia and probably must devote most of its funds to Georgia residents.

That said, I almost wish they didn’t admit OOS students who can’t pay the full COA. If they aren’t need blind then surely they knew with my 4065 EFC that I couldn’t think of attending without significant aid, so why get my hopes up?

I received my Pell, a nonGA tuition credit of 7500, the ACG and FSEOG for a grand aid total of 13000. The COA is about 37000.

While I appreciate what I got, I sadly cannot attend because I have no way of coming up with 24000 dollars. It probably would have been kinder to just reject my application.

GT Financial Aid is hilarious. Here’s an example.

Friend #1: Parents bring in less than 60k a year, one son already in college at UGA. His EFC = $99,999.00 No joke.

Friend #2: Parents make at least $120,000 a year (he won’t specify and doesn’t really know). His EFC = $720. His aid package also is pure grants.

No joke (and will show you how old I am): When I went to Ga Tech, here were the costs:

Tuition: $133 per quarter for in-state, $333 per quarter for out-of-state
Dorm: $80 per quarter
Meal Plan (breakfast and dinner): $140 per quarter.

There was no way I could afford that at the time, so I went as a co-op student working at Martin-Marietta (now Lockheed-Martin) making the fabulous sum of $2.05 per hour. I still needed scholarships and loans to get through… My how times have changed.

I could make it there then (no help from my parents at all), but now, there is no way a student can be on his/her own.

^^^^ ~197_?

Just guessing based on the hourly wage???

I started in 1964. Counting both undergrad and then grad school, I left Ga Tech in 1973. I remember the 1964 costs very well, because I was trying to raise the money to go, but I have no idea what the costs were by 1973. But in grad school I had a fellowship that paid everything.

you were well paid for 1964 :-)

So as an international student who possibly can’t pay more than 5-10K on his own, is it useless to apply?

I think I made $2.12 per hour at my on-campus job, 1973.

We received our son’s awards letter on Monday. It really wasn’t very much, and he missed getting the Pell Grant because our income was about $5k over the limit. OK, I can live with that…but here’s the kicker. That night I got an email from FAFSA telling me that corrections to his application have been made: our EFC jumped from $4k to over
$15k! I called FAFSA on Tuesday and they told me that GA Tech had “corrected” our income and increased it by over $25k!! I’ve emailed and called our financial aid Rep, but haven’t heard a thing back.
Can schools do such a thing?

Did GT ask for your tax returns? If so, you were subject to “verification.” The school looks over your returns and W-2’s and can make changes to the FAFSA.

GT corrected my FAFSA but it actually lowered my EFC, although not by much.

Their FA is another story! Are you OOS? Although I did not expect them to “meet need,” they awarded me less than half of their own “unmet need” figures.

As for return calls or emails, I have yet to hear back from a Monday email to my GT FA counselor. I am assuming they are swamped with calls and emails.

Yes, they have my tax returns, w2’s, etc, and yes, our app was subject to verification. I understand that if they don’t want to give us any more money for our son, they don’t have to. But how can they increase my income when it’s clearly stated on our tax returns?
Yes, we’re out of state. We live in FL. I think the gap between what is offered and what we need is about $15k/year. This is my son’s #1 pick, but I’m getting the feeling that he won’t be able to go there.
