Georgia Tech Global Economics and Mod Lang or University of South Carolina International Business?

@MYOS1634 You have expressed my own concerns. He thinks he can/wants to go for 3.65 GPA and the double business major/minor in language. Keeping the Zell Miller scholarship at Tech (3.3 GPA) may be difficult, too. USC departmental scholarships are awarded on April 15th. If he doesn’t receive any of those scholarships, then his decision will likely be made for him. He’s looked into other scholarships, and the majority don’t award until after the May 1 decision date.

Yes, that seems about right. In hindsight, I would have reached out to the Bursar’s office to ask for a bill estimate to make sure that I was capturing the fees correctly. I’m not sure if they do it, but they should. For meal plans, we took the 16 meals first semester, and dropped to 14 for second.

I would encourage him to visit UGA since you are in state and it is an easy trip. I have a college friend who visited yesterday and UGA jumped above UVA (our alma mater) on her child’s list. We live in Athens and it is a great town. They loved it. The Honors College is excellent and offers lots of opportunity. As far as GT goes, it is a real contender for my son who is a junior. When we went to the admissions program they told us of a new bill that passed which gives people with STEM classes a boost on their GPA to help equalize the field in keeping the Zell/Hope. Not sure how many classes it would apply to for your child but worth considering.

@UVAmom23 In regards to the STEM bill - that is so exciting! He will have to take several math classes, a couple of science classes, and a computer science class, so this will help tremendously. As far as UGA goes, I’m having no luck getting him to visit. There are a couple of HC admitted students days coming up, but he won’t go. I think he just really wants to go someplace different - most kids from our area who go off to school end up at UGA. Good luck to your junior as he starts applying this fall!!!

@captain229: any progress in decisions?

@MYOS1634 - He bought a Georgia Tech t-shirt at TJ Maxx the other day!!! He hasn’t hit the decline button at South Carolina or UGA, yet, but I think he’s about ready to say yes to Tech!

Thanks for the update!
Do let us know how he came to a decision, as this process is very useful for future readers.

@MYOS1634 Georgia Tech was the best deal financially because of Georgia’s Zell Miller Scholarship which pays for tuition. UGA would have fit the bill financially, too, but ds felt Tech is the better choice academically. The reason he wanted to go to South Carolina was because of their international business school and honors college, but we told him we could not justify the extra expense ($10,000/year), and he ultimately decided he did not want to take out any loans.

Congrats to your son! I suspect mine will end up there also :slight_smile: He is in state with very strong grades and scores and wants to be an engineer. As you say, the Zell Scholarship is very hard to turn down particularly when it is such a strong school nationally! Plus my son wants a larger school in a big city. I am sure he will love it!

So this is from the GT website - apparently started this fall 2017.

Effective Fall 2017, when calculating the HOPE and Zell Miller Scholarship postsecondary GPA, an additional weight of 0.5 will be added to grades of B, C, and D for approved degree level Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) courses taken at an eligible Postsecondary Institution Fall 2017 or later.

@UVAmom23 Congrats to your son, too! An engineering degree from Tech will open doors! I can’t tell you how excited I am about the 0.5 bump to STEM classes!

^ he won’t have an engineering degree but an economics+foreign language degree but it will open doors anyway.

@MYOS1634 I was referring to the ds of @UVAmom23, but I agree, any degree from Tech will open doors!
