Georgia Tech GPA calculation for undergraduates?

I know that GT has its own version of GPA calculation, but does it include freshmen year grades, or only sophomore through junior year grades?

They no longer recalculate the GPA but they do look a freshman grades. However I think they take into consideration how your GPA is compared to others at your school.

@MichiganGeorgia‌ See that makes alot of sense, but if they want to go through the trouble of comparing with others at your school, I don’t understand why they don’t just look at class rank.

Class rank does not take into account course rigor. My daughter (incoming freshman) graduated 69/408 with a 4.1 GPA. This is because many of those ahead of her had less rigor (and a 3.6 freshman year!). Her school ranks using unweighted GPA which favors those who take easier classes. Georgia Tech likes rigor.

^ Exactly. The majority of the kids ranked above my son in his class did not take the advanced or AP classes. GT will look at your schools rigor number.

Well that’s actually very good to hear. Do you think I will still be competitive if I only have like a 3.66 unweighted and 4.3 weighted? That seems alot lower than many people I’ve seen on here that are planning to apply to tech, but I took alot of Honors and 6 APs my Junior year.

Have you been for a visit? At the talk they will tell you that they consider gpa/rigor, test scores, ec’s and essay. It is hard to say what would be competitive since the move to the common app opened up so many more applications. Look at the EA/RD admissions threads to see who got in this past year. Definitely apply EA. This year 40% EA applicants were admitted vs a total admit rate of 33%. I would also recommend to apply EA to any college you are interested in that offers you that choice.

I have been for a visit, but only a self guided tour when dropping off my brother (he goes to tech).

So is the freshmen year GPA calculated into the GPA on the application, or do they merely look at them?

Yes they count freshman grades.
