My son already received an invitation to apply to the Honors Program and other Living Learning Communities.
Don’t worry too much about these special living groups. There is not enough space in them for everyone who applies and since they are gender balanced, its very hard for boys to get in, but probably getting harder for girls too. They make this a huge hype at GaTech and it basically rejects a lot of kids. Its a big bummer to get a kick in the butt from
the school you want to go to, right off the bat. All Freshman dorms are fine and about the same, its nine short months. You can get into Honors Apartments easily
for sophomore year, by applying to honors once you get to Tech, if you are earning As at Tech.
For upperclassmen honors–
Crecine , the Honors apartments are very expensive compared to other housing arrangements. They are newer with kitchens and near the nice swimming pool on the west side of campus.
The hype over Grand Challenges and Honors just sets up a ton of kids for failure right away, and put a sour taste in our mouth about GaTech. Luckily it did not matter at all, but it does hurt to get a reject from the school you want to go to, so consider that its a short nine months, you will make friends no matter where you live, and do you really want extra academic work that Grand Challenges requires? Do you really want to live with the ultra smarts, or just regular smart people at Tech?
It creates a sort of nasty two tiered system that is just so unnecessary, but its a marketing tool to attract parents, is my feeling. It totally does not matter, and the Putnam Math winners are often not selected for honors. Oh well. Its all hype.
