The age old question, i think.
i got accepted to both. call me stupid, but i do not like math/science. im debating on going for business at the moment. but ive heard that no matter what your major is, tech's name alone will stick with you around the world.
do you think i should go to tech, and can i be happy and have a social life if i try?
or should i go to uga?

bump…

Stay focused on the big picture. With the economy and job market the way it is you want to build the best resume you can have to get a job. Georgia Tech is by far the better academic choice. Any school you go to can have a great social life if the students make the effort but I do understand your question. I have a similar concern that my athletic, social but bright son will enjoy his social experience at Georgia Tech so any input regarding that side of college life at Tech would be greatly appreciated.

Unless things have changed significantly since I graduated from Tech three decades ago, if you do not like math/science then you would probably do better at UGA. Even within your business classes you are likely to find that the GT classes will have more of a quantitative focus and if that is not your thing you will struggle in class rank and therefore will not have gained an advantage in getting your first job. Tech may pull more national/global companies to recruit than UGA, but UGA grads do not struggle to find jobs in state or in the region. The cachet of where you got your degree fades with time since after your first job recruiters will be more interested in what you accomplished in the work world rather than the academic world, so the value is really just for that first job.

As far as social life, I had a great time at GT. Yes, the academics were rigorous, but that didn’t prevent me from going to football and basketball games, playing intramural sports, writing for the newspaper, exploring Atlanta, going to parties, going to concerts, going to clubs, and even meeting the woman that became my wife.

thanks so much!

I agree with cltdad, only go to GT if engineering/math is what you’re into. UGA is still a good school.

well yeah but i dont want to stay in georgia or the south the rest of my life, so i feel like i should go to gt for the job prospects, if anything…

Check the course requirements at Tech. I believe you have to have 2 semesters of Calculus and 2 semesters of a lab science for ANY degree. Tech’s calculus classes are extremely difficult.

This is not an age-old question, unless you have no idea what you’re talking about. UGA is a crappy state school with a mediocre reputation. GTech is one of the top schools in the south. Not even comparable. No one asks this question.

Actually, UGA is doing quite well for itself. The honors college has a really great program going as well. Plus, an engineering degree from GaTech (no matter how good the school is) isn’t going to do you any good if you’d like to go into history.

GTech is be looked upon better at graduation than UGA at everything.

informative - My eldest (HS valedictorian) CHOSE UGA over Duke, Vanderbilt, William & Mary, etc. She knew she would go to grad/med school and has had an amazing experience there - research published as a sophomore, undergrad TA, internship as sophomore, and oh yeah, a 4.0 bio major - her junior year she has traveled around the world through Semester at Sea and will spend the spring studying at Sciences Po in Paris - so yes, UGA can be an AMAZING experience - she would make the same choice again. On the other hand, my HS senior will attend Ga Tech because they obviously have the better recognized engineering program. Most college experiences are what YOU make them. Both are great schools and when you slam one, it only reflects poorly on you.
annu1995 - UGA’s Terry College has an excellent reputation but I’m sure you’ll go elsewhere for your MBA anyway, right? (since you want to leave the south?)

Georgia Tech is likely the better school in most respects, but it 100% certainly depends on all factors combined. Visit and research both and see which you like.

Georgia Tech and UGA are both great schools. I’d imagine Georgia Tech to be more rigorous as they expect excellence in not just your major but in the sciences as well. Tech also probably looks better in terms of applying for that first job/grad school. If I didn’t get accepted to William & Mary ED, I’d probably be going to Georgia Tech, since I got accepted there as well.

yeah, like i said, thats kind of what i figured- tech would be better in the long run for jobs. except when i visited, everyone seemed pretty miserable and that was kind of a turn off. i do want to go to college and have fun, so anyone who goes there, can you tell me a little about the social life…?:)

Management at Tech lets you escape many of the dreaded first year classes that the science/engineering majors have to take like Physics 1, Calculus 1, and CS (you can choose bio, survey of calculus, and intro to media computation, respectively, instead).

Also, I wouldn’t say everyone is miserable. I generally have a poker face as I’m walking around, but I’m usually thinking about my research while doing so. I imagine most people are doing the same.

If you’re looking for pizza and only pizza, you’d visit Papa Johns instead of Golden Corral. But if you’d like to sample a lot of variety, your better choice would be Golden Corral. Similarly, I would recommend that you go to Tech only if you are driven to focus in a particular field about which you have no doubt and only if you have no interest in exploring a variety of disciplines and interests. UGA would be the place for dabbling and exploration.
