Just a quick question
Currently, Georgiatech (6th)is rated at par with Michigan Ann Arbor(6th) and below Illinois Urbana Champaign (4th) at US news for Best engineering programs. But, in the recent past was the order of ranking different. If so, what was the order?

Which engineering program would you guys recommend me to go for from the above listed colleges?

The rankings are irrelevant. There is no real difference between 4 and 6. The three have been in that range for a long time. Are you in-state for any of those? If so, you should seriously consider that one because of much lower cost. If not, Mich is more expensive than UIUC which is more expensive than GTech. For high stat candidates, some merit aid is a possibility for out-of-state at UIUC and GTech and a little less so for Mich. Mich and UIUC are college town areas, GTech is in a major city so your preference may also be a factor; likewise on the fairly equal male to female ratio at Mich and UIUC but 4 to 1 at GTech; mild weather for GTech in winter, cold and snowy at the other two. Mich and UIUC are complete universities with many colleges making a change of mind easy if you decide to switch out of engineering to other areas. GTech is primarily eng and science, and, although it has a business and A&S college, the pickings are slimmer. GTech, more than the others, still has a rep of using freshman and sophomore classes to weed-out students. Though all three have good coop/internship programs, GTech relies on it as a major selling point and thus concentrates a lot of resouces on it. Mich has the nicest campus, followed by UIUC, and GTech is OK but not stellar.

In other words, look into each college and decide which one you prefer and can afford but ignore those rankings in doing so.

A friend of mine has been accepted at both GATECH and UIUC... and he really cant make up his mind about which one to attend. He's done his research, ranks dont matter to him and neither does the money.

I tried to help him out but still he cant make up his mind. Which one would any one of you prefer?

well if that's the case it comes down to which is the nicer campus. also weather is somewhat important. hint: humidity. has he visited the actual campuses or simply seen pictures and videos?? tell him to check out "theu.com" and search illinois. it's got pretty good videos of illinois and sums up the campus.
