Georgia tech vs Northwestern

Hi, Which university is better for an Industrial Engineering Major, Northwestern or Georgia tech? I am not only asking about the academic aspect, but about the whole college experience.

Thanks

For academics,
Undergrad,
Georgia Tech is the best in Industrial
Northwestern is within the top ten (#8)
Graduate,
Georgia Tech is the best in Industrial
Northwestern is within the top five (#5)

Georgia Tech is clearly superior for academics concerning Industrial Engineering.

For the college experience,
Georgia Tech is located in Atlanta, Georgia, big city life.
Northwestern is located in Evanston, Illinois, which is 5-20 miles away from Chicago, very close to proximity of big city life.

Georgia Tech has much warmer weather, Northwestern is right next to lake Michigan = much colder weather.

They both are about the same size for student body, 17000 for Northwestern, 18000 for Georgia Tech (Surprising).

Georgia Tech has a 2 guy to 1 girl ratio. Northwestern has 51% girl to 49% guy ratio.

Don’t know about your aid status with either school so won’t comment on tuition.

Overall, it depends on what you find important,

I’m actually in the process of applying for graduate industrial engineering programs,

my criteria were warm weather, so Georgia Tech 1
Guy to Girl ratio, North Western 1
Prestige, Georgia Tech 1
Size (Bigger the better), both equal

I would go for Georgia Tech.

I think Northwestern is better for the whole college experience

thanks… I did not request financial aid… But a think Georgia tech is the best option in the academic subject, but I would like to know more about the social life… I read that people there are no very happy… a significant percentage would rather go to another college

You’ll find a negative perception because the engineering college has a high fail-out rate. The admissions criteria are not strict enough for the difficulty of the school, in my opinion. So you find many students that “can’t cut it”, drop out or change majors after a few semesters of low-GPA study, then just complain about how awful the school is.

As for social life, there are hundreds of student organizations, about 40 Greek organizations, and plenty of nightlife in Atlanta. Atlanta isn’t Chicago, but it’s still a very nice place to live with plenty to do. Your best bet is to visit both campuses and make a decision.

But, yes, Georgia Tech is the best place for industrial engineering. It’s been #1 for 16 years running, and recently the gap between #1 and #2 has been growing. There are excellent opportunities for graduates, as well.

They’re both excellent schools. GT is better (the best) but it isn’t like you’re going to walk out of a top 10 engineering school without a pretty decent job if you work hard, have interpersonal skills and do internships. If things like guy/girl ratio and not being in the middle of a city are very important to you, Northwestern is a very good choice. If those things aren’t as important to you or you like the idea of being in the middle of a city instead of just near one, GT might be the right choice.

There’s also the regional aspect. If you want to intern and eventually work in the Chicago area you’ll find more connections to that area at Northwestern, and the same goes for if you want to work in the south with GT. GT has a more national reputation but Northwestern is also well known to engineers.

Like GP said, really try to visit both and talk to students. A more prestigious school doesn’t really help if you’re miserable there and get worse grades because of it, but you may find that you’re just as happy or happier in an environment like GTs as you would be at Northwestern.

Don’t be surprised if part of the nightlife at GA Tech involves you getting robbed.

Really?

Purdue had 139 cases of burglary last year. Georgia Tech had 85.
Georgia Tech had 1 on-campus robbery, Purdue had 2.

Neither are unsafe, but to suggest that Tech students are dodging bullets is a joke. It’s one of the safer campuses in the country, which is particularly impressive given that it’s in the downtown of a major US city.

Not the first or only story I have read about GA Tech students getting shot.

Your point?

[Indy.com | Post: Purdue campus on edge after robberies | Indianapolis, Indiana](<a href=“IndyStar: Indianapolis Star, Indiana news, breaking news and sports”>IndyStar: Indianapolis Star, Indiana news, breaking news and sports)

Crime happens near every campus.

There’s a big difference between sticking a gun in someone’s face and actually pulling the trigger.

There’s not a big difference in where it’s more likely to happen though. At GT you’d probably have to exercise more caution when it comes to going out, especially at night, but the same goes for being in Chicago too.

Only one of the articles you posted involved a shooting, and both situation took place off campus. The one I posted was on-campus at Purdue. Not to mention the crime statistics I posted above.

Given all this evidence, if you’re going to imply that Georgia Tech is unsafe, you must agree that Purdue is unsafe, as well, right?

I almost forgot about Northwestern…

Burglary: 109
Robbery: 1

Off-campus is a fact of life. I can’t think of anyone who stayed on-campus all the time. This seems to be relevant when the OP is asking about the “whole college experience.” I would walk around West Lafayette at night well before I’d consider doing the same in Atlanta.

Northwestern is not in Chicago (at least, not the part you’d be in as an undergraduate).

As far as IE and the price, GT can’t be beat. On the other hand, Northwestern is definitely more balanced and diverse. Also, at Northwestern, about half the IE students double-major in economics, which is one of the best in the country.

GT is a state school, and if you’re from out of state, well, you’re going to be paying quite a bit, and not much aid money is going to come your way.

thanks guys, I think GT will be the one!

Have you visited both colleges and received award letters?

I will not have the chance to visit the campus unfortunately and I have not received letter… Im just thinking ahead…
