Troy, NY

Which one of the two schools is regarded more prestigious in computer science? If a company were to hire someone from RPI or Georgia Tech, which college would the company prefer? Both look good, but am i overlooking something?

Well, I don’t know about hiring but RPI seemed to have a lot of job fair companies that visit. Something about more companies visit than actual students can take the jobs some years. But really, the campus is nice and the people are great. Everyone’s a bit geeky and I really liked it when I visited. The boy:girl is off for the guys but it’s a nice small school and the students help each other out from what I observed (rather than some places that are more cutthroat to competition). Just throwing that out there.

I go to GT and I can say basically the same stuff as lucky2010 said about RPI. GT has a LOT of companies visit, especially in the college of computing - every week or two a new company comes in and hands out t-shirts and goodies and has info sessions and accepts resumes.

However, to answer your main question, I don’t think a company would discriminate much between the schools; that might depend on the location of the company. Companies in Georgia will definitely say “wow” to a GT grad, but it may be the same about RPI up north.

For Computer Science, GT is #9 (1st in southeast) and RPI is #48 (5th in NY state), so there is a difference there.

As far as careers, both are heavily recruited. To add to maea’s comment, Tech has a three year waiting list to get into the career main career fair. Consequently, there are smaller department career fairs at least once/semester, and several companies that just periodically set up a booths in the Klaus atrium / walkway to give away things and recruit CS students. The biggest difference you’ll see in hiring is that RPI will likely have more northeastern companies, while Tech will have more southeastern and gulf coast companies. Both will have companies recruiting from all across the country, though.

I think you would do fine at either one. Gatech is a big school with world class instruction/facilities. R.P.I. is a small school with world class instruction/facilities. Both schools have exceptional students. R.P.I.'s mean SAT for the class of 2013 was 1354/1600 and the class of 2014 should be ever higher because they had 9.0% more applicants and the mean SAT scores of the applicants is up 13 points from last year. Gatech’s students also have those kinds of scores.

We recruit many grads from these schools at Texas Instruments.
