So I am planning on majoring in chemical engineering. Tech is more expensive than Davis by 8k a year, for a total of 32k in all. I plan on researching a lot during my undergraduate years, starting in freshman year. Are the opportunities for research at Davis inferior to those at Tech, and how does the quality of research compare? And when I apply for graduate school, is there a big difference between attending Davis rather than Tech? It seems like top graduate programs only accept students from top undergraduate programs.

Both are great but quite different. I would visit both, if possible, and then decide.

Davis’s program will not hold you back versus Georgia Tech.

No Berkeley, eh, lunatic?

Yes I’ve visited both, I’m not too picky of a person, both are fine to me. My dad wants me to attend Davis to be close to home while my mom wants me to attend Tech for their top ranked engineering program.

That’s good to know :)

Nope, didn’t get in We’ll see about graduate school though!

Sorry to hear that.

The money difference isn’t huge. Go where you could see yourself being happiest.

luna, you understand that the ChE program at each of these schools is going to be pretty intense, don’t you? Not much breathing room first few years. How are you going to fit “research” into your freshman year?

Sit down with your parents, and talk about just exactly what 8k each year for four years will mean. Perhaps they can pay for it all, and would be happy to if you just feel that Tech is a “better fit”. However, in many households, the vote would go for the cheaper option.

I like this calculator from FinAid.org because it breaks the financials down in a detailed way, and it includes some non-financial criteria that can be important. Try running it and see what you think: [FinAid | Calculators | Advanced Award Letter Comparison Tool](<a href=“Your Guide for College Financial Aid - Finaid”>Your Guide for College Financial Aid - Finaid)

Haha yes I will sign up for one of those if I go to Tech

Yes I understand the program will be intense, but I am sure I can find time for research and other activities. And I only have a few years in undergrad, haha!

Thanks, we will try that, see how it goes.
