Georgia Tech vs UCLA

I know decisions haven't come out yet. However, I have been accepted into Georgia Tech already. I just want to start this final decision process early. Please, do not choose not to reply because UCLA decisions have not come out. A girl can always dream, right?

Just wondering especially because of the recent UC budget cuts and the upcoming major budget cuts.

Thanks. Oh, and I will be majoring in engineering.

GeorgiaTech is an excellent university for engineering. Are you in state for either of these universities?

Nope, I am an international student!

GeorgiaTech Is probably a notch above engineering over UCLA. But that might not be known internationally, where UCLA will probably have the edge.

I have been in the high tech industry for the last 25 years, first as a design engineer (EECS) then as management/businessman. I have met and worked with many great engineers from all over the country and the world. Overall, I found that US still produces some of the best engineers in the world. Japan, Taiwan and Korea engineers are also pretty good. UK, Germany and Australia somehow didn’t impress me. China? Oh boy. That is a different topic.
Anyway, UCLA is a great school and their engineering is not bad. GT is also great and their engineering is pretty strong. And depending on which engineering discipline you pursue and your future plans, each school has it strength and weakness. If you are in Chemical engineering, you should go with UCLA as UCLA has a strong Chemistry program. But for civil/mechanical, I would imagine that GT may have the edge (Hey, that is my humble opinion, so you ME and CE bruins hold your tomatoes). As far as EE is concerned, both UCLA and GT is just above average (again in my humble opinion). I would even consider SJSU; it has a better EE program than either. Let’s face it, CE/ME/EE are all different majors. Yes, you will need your basic Calculus, Physics and beyond. But they are really different majors. What is your major?

Also, UCLA is a bit more recognized worldwide, so if you are planning to go back to your homeland, UCLA probably carries a better name. If you want to stay in California, UCLA will also pave your way. But if you like to stay in the east coast (NY, NJ), GT will give you a better chance.

PM me if you like to chat.

Any thoughts on Georgia Tech v/s UCLA for Aerospace and Bioengineering. I am an international student. I am admitted to Georgia Tech and have received the invite to admitted students event at UCLA.

With all due respect, you are absolutely clueless. Gatech and UCLA ee are not “just above average”, but are top 10-15 in the world in basically any ranking. And SJSU is…well, not better.

To be very honest, It would depend on the reason for which you would like to do your undergrad in the USA. One doesn’t spend so much for undergrad (assuming that you will not be entitled to receive any form of financial aid) unless there is a very strong reason! If you are looking for brand recognition in the leading countries in Asia, viz. China, Korea, Japan, then UCLA is far ahead of GA Tech. In terms of employment within USA, both will give you a fair chance to get a suitable opening in the engineering industry. It is your call!

Well, I am currently doing my Masters in Aero at UCLA while my twin brother is doing his Masters in MechE at GTech, so I feel, I am well qualified to answer this question. I feel UCLA has a charm of its own, something which you may not find at GTech. At UCLA you are in an amazing city, have tons of stuff to do, and have tons of opportunities jobwise. GTech on the other hand is located in a pretty shady part of Atlanta. GTech Mech and Aero departments have an edge over UCLA. They also have a more diverse career fair. GTech gets a lot more Automobile and Mechanical companies in their career fairs compared to UCLA. UCLA’s Mech and Aero Career Fairs gets mostly Aerospace companies, which require you to be a US Citizen or a Greencard holder. So assuming you are an International Student, I would say GTech would be a safer bet in terms of job options. UCLA is an amazing school, in a great city, with amazing weather, brand name and a beautiful campus. Having said if I were you, I would choose GTech over UCLA just because of the better job prospects and research opportunities at GTech
