Hello everyone I am Rehan. So here is my situation, I got accepted at Georgia Tech and Virginia Tech for undergraduate Mechanical Engineering as a transfer student (I will get an A.S degree from NOVA first). For Virginia Tech, I will be paying instate(15K) while Georgia Tech is out of state (27+K) which is a huge issue for me. If necessary, I am willing to work hard and study as a part time student to get a college degree from GT, but is it worth to do so? or should I go for VT and enjoy the managable tuition fee? Will I possibly get more opportunities after graduating from GT as compared to VT ?. Thank You
So the question you are asking is whether it is worth $25K to attend the #5 mechanical engineering school vs the #14 engineering school. Your salary after graduation will be similar, but GT students usually have better opportunities. If you are talking about going full time at VT vs part time at GT and taking an extra year or two, I’d probably finish at VT, save some money, and spend that $25K you saved on graduate school.
I agree with the above. GT is nice but that is too much money and taking 2 years longer to get the degree is a loss of 2 years engineering salary + 25k. It is really a cost of 150k to you if you don’t go full time.
There is virtually no reason to attend Georgia Tech if you’re a Virginia resident whom has been admitted to Virginia Tech. Rest assured that there will be numerous and various engineering employers waiting to recruit you at VaTech if you are a good candidate.
First, congratulations on having two outstanding options. If VT is comfortably affordable and GT is not then you have your answer. In general I would agree that GT has a slightly better reputation and may present a few more opportunities, but if you do well at VT you will be in great shape as well. IMO it is not worth going to school part-time, taking on loans or anything like that to go to GT over VT.
Thanks to all of you for helping me. So basically, I have everything setup for VT, I have registered for classes, I found a place to live with my friends and I am registered for orientation. So what I understand by now is that it is not worth giving up all of this just to get into GT for its better reputation right? lol bcoz this is the only thing that bothers me (as you all agree) that I might miss out the bigger opportunity to have a name of GT in my resume, a place that is more competative, highly ranked, and therefore harder to get into. So are you saying that saving money and time matters more than all of this?
Yes. The differences just aren’t that big between the two schools. According to the Wall Street Journal ([here](http://www.wsj.com/articles/SB10001424052748704554104575435563989873060)) Va Tech ranked #13 with recruiters- just ahead of Cornell at #14, and not that far behind GaTech at #7. And for engineering, it is true that Ga Tech was #1- but Va Tech was #5- out of the top 25.
You were good enough to get into GT as a transfer student from a Va CC. To me, that says a lot about what you can accomplish. There will be very good opportunities at Va Tech- and that is where you will close any gap between the two schools.
Find the internships. Be a star in your classes. Know that you do not have $25-50K in debt to service ($50K over 2 years, right?- that’s $555 / month for 10 YEARS).
As a GT alum, I recommend VPISU in your situation.
I made my decision, I am going to VT. Thnx to all of u.
Thanks for coming back to let us know- and congratulations! go and shine.
