Geoscience H vs AP Chemistry

Hey guys! I posted this in the Engineering forum but no response so I was wondering if a wider audience has any advice for me. I'm a junior in a magnet school in Nevada and I plan on majoring in civil engineering where ever I go for college. As I plan my senior schedule I am definitely taking up AP Physics B, no question. But with two open elective slots, I'm planning to take a 2nd science class which can be either Geoscience Honors OR AP Chemistry. Which sounds more suitable for me and Civil Engineering in the future? AP Chem gets rid of the general chem class I would have take my freshman year in college. Yet Geoscience is very important in Civil Engineering and I recall seeing I need to take classes like soil mechanics during my 2nd to 3rd year in college so I can get some background knowledge in this field now. Which seems better for me to do? (if this thread needs to be moved somewhere other than the engineering forum, feel free) Thanks!

If you are decent in chemistry, take AP Chem. The geo science stuff you will pick up in college. If you are lacking in AP classes, the AP Chem will look better on your college app. Also, check into taking physics C instead of B.

My school only offers Physics B goodgig =/ Okay, one vote for AP Chem, It’s not my favorite subject but I can make do with it. So worry about all the earth science later?

Take the class that you think you will enjoy more. Personally, I’d vote for Geoscience. It will help you further explore issues related to Civil Engineering and will give you an opportunity to apply some of the things that you have already learned in your general science classes.

Truth be told, AP Chem may not be a good substitute for the particular intro Chem course that your eventual college/university requires, and you might have to take their intro Chem for engineers anyway.

^^Agree. But look at science requirements for some colleges you are considering. Do you have 3 units already (including planned physics)? Some require (or recommend) that science units outside of bio, physics, and chem be ones that have one of those as pre-requisite. Does geoscience have one of these as pre-requesite?

@happymomof1, i also think the same way! Preparation for all those earth/material classes. One vote for Geoscience. I honestly don’t know which i enjoy since i actually only care about physics. Yet AP Chem is an AP which means a heavier workload

@scmom12, with AP Physics NEXT year, i would surpass many college requirements since it will be my 4th year of science. And I indeed have taken bio, chem and physics. So whatever else I take will be extra. From my knowledge, all engineering colleges suggest gearing up on calc and physics so either geo or chem don’t have any advantage there.

Thanks Guys! Keep the feedback coming!
