I just finished junior year of high school. Over the summer, I am going to Germany for 6 weeks through an exchange program in the end of june. I'll be back early august. I'm really interested in the German language, and I've been studying a little here and there before going.

My question is, after I come back, do I have a shot at all for taking the German SAT 2 with listening in November? From what i've noticed so far is that German is not really that easy to learn, there's lots of vocabulary. I am motivated to learn the language. I'm not sure what state my german will be when I get back from Germany. Should I hire a tutor these two weeks and maybe after I come back to accelerate my German learning? My target is only really above 600.

Or, is there another way I can demonstrate my German knowledge? I really want to demonstrate that I know the language, and basically learned it in one summer.

Have you taken German in high school. If not, I don’t think one can learn a language in one summer. I took the German reading test last year and scored a 760. Even though my father is Swiss, I still found the test surprisingly hard. I think the German listening test will be even harder because it is more like a test of memorization. Many people claim that the listening test is easier for some reason. German is a very hard language due to the complex grammar structure. I still make mistakes with the articles-der, die, und das. If you think you can do it, go for it. Watch German shows, listen to their music, and immerse yourself in the language.

No I have not taken it at all in school, I take French. And I agree, it IS super hard. That’s why I remain skeptical that I can pull off a 600 by November. I’m just going to study as much German as I can and evaluate my level by the time I get back. Thanks for the reply though.

Why don’t you try to take French then? Either way, I admire your interest at German because not many people take the language. I swear I am probably the only one in my city who took the German SAT test You will have a great time in Germany. The locals there are really friendly. Viel Spa
