my situation is very unusual , see I'm coming from a foreign university with a 2 years worth of units, and to my estimation its about 30-35 transferrable units. And since i'm a Bus Econ major(UCLA)/ econ ( berkeley) . And my prereqs are about 20. So if you add tha tup thats about 55 quarter units. I haven't taken any upper division courses ( since i'm studying broadcasting at the foreign university theres not that many classes that will transfer over, except probably arts/humanities and social behavior sciences classes).

I was wondering what GE pattern I should follow. I called UCLA and they told me that as long as I was done with my prereqs and have a good GPA it's fine. but I doubt that ....how many GEs do I have to take in order to get in and from what category?
I saw on assist that Berkeley requires the The L&S Requirements in Reading & Composition, Foreign Language, and
Quantitative Reasoning, then what about 7 course pattern?

so my main question is what kind of GEs should i take in order to be eligible for UCLA and UCB? please help

GEs?!!

from my understanding GEs don’t count as preparation for your major unless they’re listed as a requirement. From what i’ve seen the assist website only shows classes that serve as major preparation. As for GEs take any class that they list. This is the pattern that most people use for UCLA and UCB since those schools don’t have transfer agreements.

http://www.sdcity.edu/transfer/general_ed/IGETC.pdf

read it carefully because it has specific intructions for certain UC programs and this pattern might not work if what you’re looking for is listed there. Then from those units that you have, mark the ones that you can use to fulfill as required GEs. Also check that the schools take the units you got from that foreign school cause sometimes schools from different countries don’t take credit fromwork done in another country.

The list that I gave you is from one of the california community college websites. The classes listed are specific classes that they offer at that community college. So ignore that and just make sure that the classes you have fall under that category.

for ex. AREA 5 – PHYSICAL AND BIOLOGICAL SCIENCES. make sure the class you have or you’re planning to take is a type of biology or physical science, like that

I hope the info i provided helped you in some way.

Are you going to school at community college right now or are you still in your country?

to crestsoul: one of my biggest problems is that I do not want to follow the IGETC because I’ll be repeating some of the classes I have already taken at a foreign univeristy.( arts and humanities, social behavorial sciences, etc)
on assist.org it says that econ majors for UCLA needs to meet the
The L&S Requirements in Reading & Composition, Foreign Language, and
Quantitative Reasoning

or complete the IGETC. So if i complete the courses in those three areas am i all set?

oh, and all of my prereqs plus classes in those 3 categories, then am I ready to transfer?
to brisk: I am currently attending a CC right now, thats why Im confused about what GE classes I should take.

I would do the IGETC that way you will have more options. Your CC should be able to evaluate your transcript and give you credit for classes you took at your old university. You should get it evaluate it soon ,you don’t want not be taking some classes b/c already thinking you will be getting credit for and then you don’t.

What country are you coming from? if your country’s language is other than english then you don’t have to do foreign language(you got that cover)

as for the The L&S Requirements in Reading & Composition and Quantitative Reasoning everybody has to take two college level english classes and at least one college level math class. Those classes are part of the GEs.

Are you getting credit for those units you got from that other country?

if yes, then use them to fulfill your GE requirement. once you have your GEs done then take those classes that assist lists and you’re ready to go.

I’m not really sure if that’s what you were asking in those two last replies.

could you list the classes you are currenlty taking and the classes you took at that foreign university

no, actually that is not my question:
since I can’t follow the IGETC because IGETC does not accept foreign coursework to satisfy its different areas ( for example the arts history that I have taken at the foreign university will not suffice as one of the courses for the arts and humanities area, the mathematics course will not suffice the math area, etc),and if i do follow it i will have too many credits ( i heard it will hurt my application if i have too many credits

THEN what general education pattern should i follow? how many classes of arts and humanities, social and behaviorial science, physical and biological science, foreign language courses do I have to take in order to be eligible for enrollment at UCLA or BERKELEY?

I don’t know of any other pattern that you can follow for UCLA and UC Berkeley except the IGETC. Those schools don’t have TAG contracts like the other UCs.

You’re saying that IGETC doesn’t accept your foreign coursework, so basically you are not getting credit. You can’t have too many units if you’re not getting credit for those classes. So if the IGETC is not giving you credit then I don’t think any other GE pattern will give you credit for those classes either. The IGETC is just a list that shows which classes you can use to fulfill your GE requirement.

What I’d do is call UCLA and UC Berkely and ask them about them taking credits that were done in another country. If they tell you no then you would have to start all over again but let’s hope they’ll take the work that you did in your country.
