GEs at USC

Please let me know if you think all of the GEs require time consuming writing lots of lengthy papers. Also, are there any GEs you recommend as more enjoyable. Thanks.

I don't think that all GEs are like that. First off, 3 and 4 are science related and, from what I've seen, require no writing at all. I had friends in 2, 5, and 6 as well and it seemed to be hit and miss with writing papers and, for that matter, even more hit and miss when it comes to "lengthy." I had very few people that I knew who were writing long papers for their GEs, it was just Writing 140 that seemed to consume everyone's time (or the TO classes). If your son has any older friends at USC, maybe he can ask around and get some suggestions for GEs?

I'm interested because if I go in the fall I want to take BISC 230 (IIRC) because it's about topics in neuroscience and it fills IV (which needs to be taken at USC).

How many people are in the science courses?

When you say "lengthy" do you mean "30 pages of writing, 300+ pages of reading" or more? That's probably my average week, and I'm still able to do stuff.

There was a term paper (maybe ~10 pages?) in BISC 230 (cat 4), but honestly it was not that hard. You pick basically any topic in neuroscience you like and it was mostly graded on the content and your summation of all the reading you did to research that topic. Most people, I think, saw the paper as a way to improve their grade from the exams.

Frankly GE's do not have that much writing. When you compare to WRIT 140 which is something like, 30-35 pages of writing in one semester, most GE have far less than that.

I took PHIL 115 (cat 1) and that had relatively little writing (maybe 8-10 pages over the semester) but given that those 8 pages are like 75% of your grade, it better be a really good 8 pages. I preferred that, though.

I don't like it any more than anyone, but it is hard to expect to find GE's that do not ask for writing, it is college after all. (except for cat 3 and cat 4, you can probably expect to find classes in those categories both with and without writing)

Lol, 30 pages a week would be insane. I guess I meant 30 pages total for the semester per class and/or 300+ pages of reading a week.

Anyway, do GE's take up all of the first two semesters or what? I finished all I can... But I'm going to be "behind" because of the two that need to be completed at USC. Plus I'm not really sure how transferring would work out because I'm taking a few upper division classes that fit into my second major (I didn't/don't want to take film classes until I go to USC), so I'm not really sure how it fits in (as an elective or a requirement).

Categories 1,2 and 5. Any recommended classes you really enjoyed or any to avoid?

GEs can take two semesters or four years--I think it depends on what you're majoring in and where everything falls into place.

TO have the GE classes that you can really enjoy except they are hard.
