GEs

Can anyone give some suggestions on what GEs [What courses and what professors] to pick? And what we should NEVER pick?
Any courses would be interesting, inspiring and wothy? Any would be wasting time?

Thanks.

For your information, I will be majoring in Business Administration and hope to major also in international relations(global business).

GEs change every semester. It's also hard as a freshman to get the exact GE you want because the lazy seniors and juniors that procrastinated can take a lot of the spots, which is the same in every university. BUT, there are some helpful hints to getting a good class. There's a website: www.senatecourseguide.com that you can use to get a lot of useful information on professors and classes. We use it all the time. It's not that extensive, but it should help you :)

This is ordered most favorite first but there's things I liked about all my GE's

For Cat 5 I took Russian Art w/ Bowlt and it was really interesting and really easy but I felt like I learned a lot and any professor that can keep me awake at 8am deserves props.

For Cat 4 I took BISC 230-Neuroscience which was really fun and taught by McClure and Green (I liked McClure much better). It's a hard class but as a business major this was pretty much my only chance to take a science class (I passed out of Cat 3). And the labs are pretty good and the TA's are nice. I almost decided to minor after taking this class but picked IR instead which brings me to

Cat 6 IR 100 with Bender. This is really good class for current events/history. He doesn't go over a lot of theory in class but it's a good overview of actual events explained my some theory. I liked the subject matter but I didn't like the class structure (not a big fan of my TA).

Cat 2 SLL 330 w/ Seifrid. Interesting material but hard class. Although I think I made it a lot harder because I took it P/F but kind of slacked off on the studying for tests (although I went to every class).

Cat 1, COLT 150 w/ Farenga. It was a small class so I wished he allowed more student discussion but the material was interesting. It takes awhile for the class to get going (I think he spends too much time on the really old texts so we didn't have enough time by the time we got to Dante and The Tempest)

For Category II, I am just finishing Introduction to Contemporary East Asian Cinema, and it is awesome, particularly if you enjoy East Asian cinema.

^ i know a lot of architecture students in that class...don't know how they feel about it though.

Cat II: unless you're absolutely a fan of Asian art, don't take AHIS 125: Asian Art History from Antiquity to 1300 with Professor Lee. my...goodness. it was a boring class, with boring readings, a boring professor, and material that i felt like i would never use again. the most i felt i had learned in the class was about East Asian religions like Buddhism and Hinduism...but if i wanted to learn those, i would have taken a religion class. the class was a dud on all levels. i learned that i could not do the readings and still get A's on the tests, including the final...which meant i had to pay attention in lecture, which is enough of a challenge. ugh.

Cat I: on the complete opposite end, a class i HIGHLY recommend is PHIL 115: Ancient Greek Society, which was really just philosophy with Professor Lewis. not only did we have very few (and very easy) papers and readings, the material we went over was extremely interesting...and even if i don't remember all the philosophers and all their ideas, just how the class made you think of things in a different light was remarkable. and Lewis was a great, nice guy who's passionate about the material and his students' education. a class that truly succeeded on all levels.

Phobos- Haha i had that class too, AHIS 125! It wasn't so bad imo but its certainly not my first choice.

It'll be boring as hell but is super easy if you pay attention in lecture. yes its difficult to pay attention in lecture but... easy A. I never did the readings and always got A's on my midterms/final.

Sunnydaysee-I'm going to be taking Bowlt next sem XP man I'm gonna die though, i can't even get up for my 9 o' clock/10 o' clock classes. I really wish it wasn't this early, urgh. It better be good lol!

For cat 6, social problems isn't that bad imo. It takes care of your diversity credit as well and the class material is interesting. Too much reading though, i neglected to read 2-3 books but its all good. haha. You'll get atleast a B here, not too difficult. most likely an A.

For CATI, don't take western art antiquity to 1500 or something along those lines! Infact, don't take any classes from prof Howe. I had both Lee and Howe and Howe is soooo much worse. (that's prob why i didn't think Lee was that bad) Boring, half the class falls a sleep, midterms/final graded ridiculously and too much crap to memorize in general compared to Asian Art class. (you have to memorize EVERYTHING without missing one thing)

Bowlt is definitely a great teacher. I had him for Core 101, however, and while the class was structured pretty much exactly the same as the GE (they even have the same title), I think there was a lot more work for the TO version. I'm not digging the presentation/paper/final exam tri-combo at the end of the semester right now.

Thanks a lot guys.
One more question, if a course appears on, say, GE VI course list and also Diversity course list. Have I fulfilled the requirements of both categories if I pick that? O do I have to pick 2 different courses?

You can fulfill both requirements with one class.
