^ it's not necessarily dumb... it's a proven fact that people with 36 ACT / 2400 SAT have higher chances of getting into top tier schools for some reason

take princeton for example; 50% of people with 2400s are accepted

about 30% of those with 2350s are accepted (and a 35 equiv. is a 2340, not a 2350, so a 2340 would be about 28%-ish)

of course, test scores aren't all that, but a perfect score still looks impressive, especially tacked on with excellent ECs and leadership roles, etc..

i almost retook my 35, but i didn't; and i regret it; everyone i talked to said the october ACT was easier than the june ACT, and that's the one I got a 35 on.. and i'm almost confident i could have gotten a 36 if i retook it... but that's the past

if he wants to take it again, then why not? if he gets lower, then no one will have to know.. and if he gets a 36, well that's not all too bad, is it?

as far as the scores being on your transcript, my school does that too; those scores are UNOFFICIAL, and they won't be considered by the colleges; someone at my school a couple years back took the test 4 times and got these scores (in order) - 30, 28, 30, 34

so he went down and then back up to the same score (so the 2nd and third tests were useless, in effect), and then he shot up to a 34

where is he now? UPenn; all of those scores were on his transcript, but he only sent in that one 34 via actstudent.org

so that just shows that (1) the scores on the transcript shouldn't matter since they're not official and (2) higher is good (obviously)
