I really like oberlin and I 'm going to apply next year. My academic record is good enough but i don't play any musical instrument, so i do not fit in perfectly with the Oberlin stereotype. Does that hurt my chance? Has anyone got in without knowing anything about music?

At Oberlin College, you’ll find a cross section of musical proficiency, from those who have never picked up an instrument to those who are quite accomplished. There is no requirement to have any knowledge or interest in music to get into the college.

@August23vn - While we do have a world-class music conservatory, it is not a requirement to know any a single thing about music, or even LIKE music, to apply to or attend Oberlin.

I attended Oberlin in part to be near the caliber of musicians and performances that flock in and around the conservatory. I love being an audience member, and I enjoy listening to practically all kinds of music, but I didn’t do anything musical at Oberlin save attending concerts and befriending may a conservatory student.

My S has a good friend who will be starting at Oberlin in the Fall…and she knows nothing about music. Who knows? If you think nearly everyone has some musical proficiency, then maybe you’re at an advantage and your musical condition makes you something akin to a URM! :)
