My son is a HS senior and failed to check his emails and missed the opportunity to submit an application for scholarships to a school he is really interested in. He did get accepted, but no scholarships were offered. His grades and ACT scores are excellent ( 4+ and 34). So we have really missed an opportunity for financial aid for his freshman year, and that scholarships typically continue if grades are good. But this is a multi year endeavor.
my question is - what is the likelihood, assuming he gets good grades his college freshman year, that scholarships will be offered for his sophomore and future years?
You would have to ask the college. MANY merit awards are given to incoming freshmen that are not able to be received by upperclassmen for the first time.
Some schools have departmental scholarships for continuing students that are given to top students in the department.
Is this school affordable without the scholarship? If not, maybe a gap year, and reapply as an incoming freshman? Of course…no guarantee he will get accepted…or,get the scholarships!

Practically ZERO. those merit offers to incoming frosh are to convince them to ENROLL. There’s no incentive to reward an existing student like that…and really, many will have good grades, so not a big deal.
Depts occasionally will give a small one time only award of a 1000 or so to their best student. One year my math son got a 800 one time award for being the top math student. One year my chemE son got a one time 2000 award for being the top ChemE student.
What is your situation? Do you need merit for the school to be affordable? If so, then take a gap year (no classes anywhere) and reapply.
You can call the school and see if they’ll still offer. Call the Admissions/Scholarship office, not FA office. If you have a merit offer from another similar school then use that as leverage.

This is the correct answer. Tough pill to swallow but he missed the boat.
