Get to UC with 5 W's & 3.3 GPA?

This is my first year in college and I did alright with my first semester classes. I didn’t choose or attend classes during my second semester due to family problems and depression. But my third semester was horrible. I dropped 2 classes because one was stressing and another was hard. I have 5 classes and dropped 2 so far. And now i have 3 classes but I might drop another one. So I’ll have 3 withdrawals now. And I might also drop another class because i don’t think I’ll do good. So I might also get 4 w’s. I want to get into a UC but I don’t know if they’ll accept me because I’m getting so much W’s. I’m trying my best to not get bad grades and to raise my GPA. But some of my friends said that the most w’s i can get into a UC is about 3. And I’m so worried about this because this will effect my future. Can someone give me any advices or tell me what I should do in order to get into a UC? It’s my dream school and I’m trying very hard to get into one. Thank you!

Stop taking classes and deal with whatever problems are going on in your life right now. You are in no position to continue to take classes. Get a job and earn some money for school. When you are ready, you can always go back.

Thank you so much for this information! I will!

OP please make sure you officially withdraw. If not, you will be given straight fails for not showing up to class.

I agree with @“aunt bea” . Also, I had 5 W’s and got into UCLA and UC Berkeley last year (along with many other UCs). Focus on taking care of yourself now. You can come back to school when you’re ready. There is a specific part of the UC application where you can explain your academic history and talk about why you struggled in certain semesters.

I have 11 W’s, (10 from prev uni, 1 from CC) and was accepted to all the middle tier UC’s, plus waitlisted at UCLA. From what I’ve read online, UC’s do not care about Ws. That being said, if the course you withdrew from is a prereq for your major, you will still need to complete it before transferring. The application process for UCs are getting more competitive each year so you need to aim for mostly As, and absolutely no C’s in prereqs to remain competitive.

Hey I just got accepted to a few schools this semester with a 3.3 gpa and 7 W’s. Got into UCSB, UCD, CSU, Long beach and even waitlisted for Irvine. Personally I described why I obtained W’s on my entrance essay., and I also was committed in joining new clubs. Although I didnt do great, I explained my weaknesses, how I overcame them and what I think of the future. Remember that they take your entire life into consideration, and as long as you try your best you will get accepted to a few schools. Good luck and dont worry about the W’s. worry about how you can better yourself and look into TAG programs which gurantee your acceptance to a few UCs with a lower gpa (regardless of w’s).
