I'm taking AP Calc AB right now. I understand the material, but my teacher grades sorta weird. 20% of the grade is a single category, which only has one item right now. I got an 8/10 on it, bringing down my A- to a B+. I'm not sure if we will ever get any more grades in that category. Anyway, how much will a B hurt me in college admissions? I've never gotten a B before this. I'm apply to top LACs and lower Ivies. My interest is poli sci/history, not math, if that matters.

Insert common CCer thing here.

It doesn’t hurt when you have a B in a class. One B isn’t the end all. Get that through your system/

I know I probably sound like an annoying typical CC poster. I honestly had no idea if it would hurt me. Thanks for your answer, MIThopeful. My mom thinks it will be helpful if I get a B. Not for getting into college, but rather for my peace of mind. She wants me to get a B just to get a B. Get past it so it’s not a big deal.

But, is it early in the year. You can turn it around.

In my school, a B in AP lang is a certainty. It happens. It’s no big deal.

You probably will get more projects later if it’s 20% of the grade (or maybe it’s not really 20%). Otherwise, you can always bring that up to the teacher at the end of the semester if it’s the only thing anchoring you from an A.
Also, if you’re a junior and you improve to an A- second semester and/or get a 5 on the AP Exam, that B will look pretty insignificant.
The only reason to worry about a single B on the transcript, ever, is if you’re trying for valedictorian, but that’s kind of a meaningless title anyway.

Don’t ask; don’t tell.

I’m hoping I can turn the B around, but if I can’t, I think it will significantly destress my life. I’m a senior, so colleges won’t see my AP scores for calc. I’m talking to her tomorrow about how I can improve, possibly get a tutor.

What do you mean SandwichGirl?

This is life.

Ha, I failed my first math test in high school. First AP Calc test: F

Honestly, build a bridge and get over it. Getting a B in AP Calc is not the end of the world. I’m pretty sure I’m going to end up with one this grading period as well. Plus, the semester is still young.

Brush yourself off and press on forward.
