I'm a community college student and I am pretty sure I might get a C in my Calc 1 class. I was wondering if this will hurt my chances into getting to UCLA or UC Berkeley. ATM I have a 3.5 GPA and I'm a double psychology/philosophy major hoping to go to med school after undergrad.

Thanks in advance!

PS. This is my second year so I have fall semester left before applications.

I think it would.
I’d apply as a phil major for Berkeley bc it’s less impacted & declare both once you’re at berkeley (provided you’re admitted). Try to raise that C!! Otherwise, be sure to pull of some ballin’ ass grades in the fall

I’m pretty sure for UCLA you cannot apply for impacted majors (Psych), meaning you wouldn’t be able to switch into Psych if you were admitted as a Phil major. From my understanding (a generalization I heard from another user–take with a grain of salt or two), UCLA psych is more medical-oriented while Berkeley treats psych more as a social science–again not completely reliable to judge.

Oh I see. Assuming I get A’s on all my fall sem stuff I’ll only manage to pull off like a ~3.7 GPA, which I hope will be enough. @jyi90 I’m doing TAP for UCLA. Thanks for the replies!

although i admit it is preferable to not have a ‘C,’ people on this forum tend to exaggerate the stigma of having one or two believing it will be the complete end of them and would kill any chances of them getting into a reputable UC like UCLA or Berkeley

i was in your situation before with a similar gpa minus the double major and my advice to you is to make sure you are TAP certified because that will have a significant weigh in on whether or not you get accepted (in addition to pre reqs and personal statements). since fall’s the last semester that’ll count towards your GPA when the UC’s look at your ap in the spring, make sure you gun for a 4.0 that way it would show an upward grade trend.

I should mention that last year I applied as a Poli Sci major and I was under the average GPA like you…and I got rejected! I soooo wish I would have applied as a Phil major…I would most likely have been accepted and attending UCLA this fall =( Learn from my mistake!
