Getting a D during my senior year HELP

I’m currently in AP statistics and have a D+ and I hope it raises when I take my final. Suppose I end up with a D, does that destroy my chances of getting into a UC/CSU? I already met the math requirement so technically I didn’t even need to take this class (8th grade Algebra 1, 9th grade Geometry, 10th grade algebra 2, 11th grade pre-cal honors, ALL passed with a C or better). I’ve never had a D on my transcript so I just want to know how it will affect me. I believe you need a C or better in all A-G’s but I’m thinking that since I already passed all the necessary classes and that stats was pretty much “extra”, this wouldn’t go in that category and as a result, universities wouldn’t rescind my acceptance. any help is appreciated thanks.

The UC schools require you to notify them of this grade if you get a D. See http://admission.universityofcalifornia.edu/how-to-apply/after-you-apply/ for the info on how to do so. You need to check if CSU has a similar rule.

If you do not notify them you have made a bigger problem for yourself, that of being rescinded. They require final transcripts and by the time they get around to reading them in July they will notice the D and ask for an explanation. Then you have to wait until August until they let you know if you keep your admission. In the meantime the deadline for applying to any other 4-year has passed, and even getting classes at your local CC may be a problem.

As for more general advice, my bet is your study skills are not where they should be and that college work will be a struggle unless you improve them. From what you’ve written you have C’s an at least one of these math classes, maybe more. Many kids do the homework by flipping back thru the book to find a similar problem and using that as a guide. Before the test they read the book once or twice more. Then they take the closed-book test and discover they can’t solve problems similar to the ones they correctly turned in on the homework because they never really learned the material. If this sounds like you let me suggest a book you should read called “Making it Stick”. It is about the best methods of learning, with lots of tips for HS and college students.

@JbSilva: This ^^^ plus I would notify the CSU’s and ask what your options are if you do get a D. Although you have already met the CSU a-g course requirements, many schools like SDSU still state you need to pass any Senior classes (not just a-g courses) with a C or higher.

Some CSU’s may cut you some slack if the D is 1st semester and you can get it up to a C or higher by 2nd semester. The UC’s are usually not that forgiving. Either way, I would find out what you need to do to keep any provisional admissions, so you do have some college choices for Fall 2017.

Good Luck.

You need to talk about this with your college counselor. I am assuming that you are at the end of the first semester now. You will want to consider dropping this class from second semester, because it is unlikely that you are going to be successful when the first semester went so poorly.
