I am concerned about having a D in one class for my fourth quarter of junior year. In years past, I have never had this problem, and have always gotten A’s and high B’s,and have done honors and AP classes in social studies, english, and french. I have a decent ACT score, above the ACT score that all the colleges I’m looking at suggest having. This year, though, in Chemistry, I went from an A first quarter, to a B, to a C, and now to a D. This is the first year of my school career I have received C’s.I am greatly afraid that my challenges in this class will be seen by colleges, and I really do not want it to be a deciding factor as to whether I get in. I am looking at Cincinnati University, Michigan State, Baldwin Wallace, and Ithaca College for music performance, just to give an idea of what colleges I’m interested in. Will this fourth quarter grade affect the chances of me getting into these colleges? Please help. I’ve never experienced this issue before, and am quite frustrated. Thank you to anyone who replies.
Are the rest of your grades okay?
It sounds like chemistry is not your best subject. If you intend to major in music performance (or even mathematics or computer science), I am quite sure that chemistry is not an important consideration.
I got a D once in Art History. I actually tried quite hard in the class, but just wasn’t any good at it. It didn’t seem to matter at all. I still got into very good graduate schools (my D was as a college undergrad), and still did fine in my math courses (I was a math major), and even did quite well in a couple of music courses including a music history course.
I think that you should keep trying in all of your classes, and keep doing well in the rest of your classes. Schools will want to see that doing badly in one class does not stop you from continuing to do well in everything else, and does not cause any ongoing consequences.
Compare your overall total GPA with what each of your target schools expects. I expect that you will be fine. You will discover that the D in chemistry does not stop you from doing anything that you want to do.
What’s your semester grade? Quarters don’t usually show up on report cards.
I HIGHLY doubt the quarter grade itself will affect your chances because colleges look at the grades that are on your transcript, which is your final grade. From what you’ve posted I estimate that your final grade is probably around a B or C, not exactly sure but if I’m correct, then you shouldn’t be impacted too much. Your GPA shouldn’t drop especially if you did well in your other classes so you should be fine.
