Getting a D Sophmore Year in Precalculus

Hi am currently in my third quarter of my sophomore year in high school. My grade in Honors Precalculus for this quarter is a D. I am really worried that this D will impact my chances of getting into UC schools.

Here’s my overall math grade:

9th Grade - (Honors Algebra 2)
1st qtr - A
2nd qtr - B+
3rd qtr - B
4th qtr - A

10th Grade - (Honors Precalculus)
1st qtr - C
2nd qtr - C-
3rd qtr - D
4th qtr - currently taking

I will be taking AP Calculus AB next year as a Junior and AP Calculus BC as a senior. My current unweighted GPA is 3.6.
All my other core classes are at B+ or above.

Please let me know if my one D in Honors Precalculus this year will hurt my admissions into UC badly. I’m looking to apply at UCI, UCSD and UCD.

If you do not retake the Pre-Calc class, the D will be included in your UC GPA and you receive no extra honors points. If you pass AP Calc however, then your Pre-Calc grade is validated. 10-11th grades are the only grades used in the UC GPA calculation so it will definitely impact your chances. Much will depend upon intended major, how well you do in AP Calc and the what else you have to offer in the rest of your application. Will you receive an automatic rejection, no but it does decrease your competitiveness for these UC’s. Make sure you have some solid match and safety schools on your list.
