Getting a Full License at 17 in NY

Hey, Is it possible to get a full Class D license in NY STATE at age 17, by just take the 5 hour course, and 20 hours of supervised instruction? Or do i have to take a full certified class?

You have to take driver ed if you want the Class D license at 17, otherwise you can only get a limited junior license--Class DJ.

and with DJ you need someone who can drive over 21 in the car, right? which is useless.

Just take driver's ed junior year/summer going into senior year. Also, it's kinda useless to get a permit before driver's ed, because you wont be able to drive on your own anyway until after you pass the road test, which you should try to take ASAP after driver's ed. This all depends on when you turn 17 of course. I got my permit at 16 years, 10 months and senior license just 2 months later. It's a good deal.

You don't need someone who can drive over 21 with a DJ unless you're driving after 9. Otherwise, you're fine to drive with 2 other people in the car (no more), sans 21+ year old driver until then.

lol thats lame. in fl you get your permit at 15, license at 16 if you pass the road test. no course required

20 hours of supervised instruction? That must cost a lot.

Supervised instruction just means that you have to drive for 20 hours...and since you only have a learner permit at that point, it has to be supervised driving. You don't pay for it, it's just driving around with your parents or whatever 21+ year old is teaching you to drive.

Oh ok, thanks guys.

The requirements vary by county, I think.

The requirements DO vary, but only in 3 areas. NYC is the most rigid, and upstate is the most lax about it. The requirements I posted are pretty much the outlines of NYC driving laws/rules, but it pertains to my area (Westchester).

Yea i live in Queens, but i think the requirements are about the same, theres only a huge difference when you compare NYC to upstate.

Florida is sweet. License by 16!

If you live on long island or the city then you basically cant do **** with a DJ. If you live upstate then im pretty sure you can drive from 6am-9pm by yourself and after that then i think you need a guardian. If you want your license when your 17 youll need to take drivers ed

You can get a normal license if you wait until you're 18 without any of this.. :)

I am turning 17 in a month - and I dont have Driver’s Ed yet. I have had my permit for about 10 months now, and have WAY over 20 hours driving. When I turn 17, can I take my road test with a 5-hour course and the parental supervision thing and get a Junior License? How about without a 5-hour course?

I thought every state gave licenses at 16 and permits at 15…guess not.

Just take the Driver’s Ed class. It means getting your full license a year earlier than normal. Totally worth it, especially if you live upstate.
