Getting a good finance internship?

My older brother, who did an internship at Merrill-Lynch as a college student, said it is just about impossible for a HS kid to get an internship at a place like that.

But many of you have seemed to do it. How did you go about doing it?

(And like a good one too…not sorting papers, actually helping/learning).

Any ideas?

chances are that your brother is a junior doing a summer internship right? i think those are set up basically so u can get a job as an analyst with the company afterwards. i dont think big banking companies like meryll offer interships to hs kids but if they did im almost positive you wouldnt be doing any real worksince i hear actual first year analysts do a lot of grunt work themselves.

at a place like meryll-lynch...than yes it is probably hard. these HS kids are doing it up with 1500+ sats, 4.0 gpas, hours of previous research, communtiy service etc..

but if your just looking for a decent paying internship than there are a plethora of them out there. TONS AND TONS are out there. and you don't need super stats to get them. just the desire and initiative to apply. bring your knowledge about the institution's programs and research to the table. show your interest through essays, and show your qualities through teacher recommendations. typical summer internships last 8 weeks and your usually paid at least around $1500-2000. i know in california alone there are probably dozens of internships for HS students. some programs will range from extremely selective to extremely large. however the majority of internship deadlines are in february and march so if your looking for one this summer , unless you got a hookup with a local hospital or something your pretty much stuck until next year.

ex: lawerence berkeley national laboratory is having their decisions coming up in a week or two. they accepted 44 students last year from 27 different high schools. They don't ask for SAT scores...just grades, your knowledge of laboratory work, and good recommendations. a prominent laboratory and they don't even ask for SAT scores...
