Getting a job this summer!

So I'm another 18 yr old who cannot get a job. Last year in HS I tried all summer to find a job, but I couldn't. I have ZERO job experience. I know that in this economy, one can't simply jump into a job without prior job experience. So this year, I plan to start small.

What small job can I find that wouldn't require any experience? Anything to get me started. Once I get started, I plan to get a slightly bigger job, and so on.

The volunteering that I do in college is all environmental stuff. So I never get to handle money or manage important club events. Are there any college clubs that can help me on my resume?

Any tips?

McDonalds, Burger King, other fast food places, and Walmart are typically hiring.

McDonald’s, Walmart, Target, etc. Most places hiring cashiers or people for stock. won’t require experience. Your city might also have a program to get teens summer jobs…mine did.

Do you like kids? Have you babysat before? You could apply to be a camp counselor.

Your age might have something to do with not finding a job last year. In my store (retail department store) we can only hire applicants under 18 if it is for a cashier position. Under 18 cannot do a lot of the freight work, use the freight elevator, have hours restrictions, etc. So you may find more luck this year.

Agreed, fast food, retail stores (department stores mostly, specialty shops look for experience more often), perhaps a hostess or dishwasher at a small restaurant. You can list your volunteer work and use those examples during the interview.

Grocery stores, big box stores, restaurants like Applebees and whatnot.

Just apply every single place you go.

I know of someone who did this for a few months and she finally got a job at a pizza place. But seriously, every restaurant or fast food place that she went to, she applied for a job for.

Also… ask your parents if they have any friends who are hiring. A lot of people get jobs that way. Do you have any friends with jobs? Ask them to put in a good word for you.

Apply, apply, apply. Follow up with personal visits to the place’s manager to hand in your resume.

All you need is one job. Go get’em.
