Getting a job

I was just wondering how difficult it would be to get a job as a freshman? I don’t have work study, and this would be my first job ever. So I don’t really know how to go about it. I’ll have a car, so off campus jobs are plausible though on campus would be preferable.
Can anyone provide any tips for finding a job? Or better yet, juggling school work and work work? I feel like I should start looking for a job now but considering I’m 600 miles away from Tuscaloosa… :)

If you’re interested in reffing intramural sports then you can get a job easy. Lil bro did it last year after seeing a flyer about it hanging in the rec center.

They have you take a 2 hour class for training purposes and then put you on the schedule. You can pretty much get as many hours as you want. They only pay minimum wage but it’s easy work and right on campus.

Just stop by the rec center and inquire if you’re interested.

Depending on what AP credits you’re coming in with, you might be able to snag a tutoring job…

The application link is on the right side of this page…about 6-7 links down.

Also, The Strip has many businesses that hire college kids…look there as well. No car needed.

I have a friend from Michigan whose son attends Alabama. He also wanted to work throughout the school year. He landed a cook’s position at Ruby Tuesdays. Another one of my son’s friends worked at Cracker Barrel. So if you don’t mind driving a little, you may be able to find work outside of the Strip.

S made $50 for each game he ref’d so he’s a little spoiled I think, and they pay in cash. I had to file taxes for him a couple of years as he made more than the minimum of an ind contractor. These are only grade-schooler games and he’s been doing them since he’s been 13 and it has been a great source of spending $$. But they are a little competitive up here, we live in one of those “soccer towns”. Plus he is licensed, you have to take a course and and exam and you have to pay $$$ for that and the uniform you have to buy, the stop watch, etc.

I think he has visions of taking his bus boy experience from this summer and working at a rest. What he hasn’t thought out is that it will be exactly the times he won’t to work- fri & sat nites. He managed to snag a lunch time spot this summer.

I think he should look into tutoring- he should make use of the 5’s he got on APs and his writing/english skills. I mentioned this and he still doesn’t think he’s qualified. As long as it’s not math…ha ha He’ll figure it out I’m sure.

At first, it can be hard to find jobs working with profs…but after the first year, my kids have also found jobs working for profs doing various stuff.

And…there are TA jobs…these are jobs helping in classroom labs, taking roll, proctoring exams, grading homework. Again, these can be had after you’ve taken the class and the prof thinks you can do the job.

Older son was a TA for Philosophy Deductive Logic for several semesters…he really liked that job.

Yeah that’s the problem with the restaurant jobs. You’ll have to work at the times you most won’t want too like football weekends.

I guess if you’re not a fan (beyond my comprehension) it won’t matter much. Plus the money would be pretty decent with all the business.

^^^

That’s why my kids like tutoring and TAing…no weekend work…so free for football!

This thread reminds me that I need to find a work study position. I don’t mind working the graveyard shift, but would like to attend all of the home football games.

One thing to remember when looking for jobs is that Alabama has a minimum wage of $7.25 per hour (lower for tipped workers). That said, on-campus work is exempt from FICA, so students will get to keep more of their paycheck.

Thank you for those links, gojack. Does anyone have any experience with applying for jobs through the university’s student employment website? I guess I should start there, I just feel like it won’t be as easy as it seems.

I also have no clue about anything when it comes to sports, but that’s not to say I couldn’t learn. I don’t think I should be reffing much of anything though :)

I’m sure I’m going to feel like an idiot as soon as I ask, but M2CK, what links are you referring to? I don’t see any links on the right hand of this page.
