So I didn’t realize we were going to be signing up for classes in orientation and I lagged on signing up, and gotta late date (8/14). Will this greatly affect my chances for getting my classes? I’m a psych major doing pre-med.
@ericbadmon no an equal number of class spots are divided amongst the orientation slots. There is no difference
@10s4life thanks for the info. But am I not gonna be able to get the class times/teachers I want due to my late date? Or does it still not matter? Nice to know that at the very least I’m gonna get all my classes.
@ericbadmon no like an equal amount of each class section is divided amongst the orientation. Orientation time literally doesn’t matter
section 1a 10am 10 spots
Section 1b 12pm 10 spots
Etc
@10s4life, do you know why some Cluster classes are showing up as full right now if they keep spots open for each of the orientation sessions? Will more openings appear when each orientation starts?
@pickledginger They open up right at each orientation session. Students won’t see openings until then as the registrars office is continually monitoring for changes.
Four years ago, I had a late orientation as well, if I am not mistaken it was August 14, or 16 as well, (Has it been four years?! ) but regardless, I got into every class I wanted. I was a pre-history major, and like the psych department, it is very large. That is a good thing, because there will always be people who drop, you just need to check the updates on classes you want that have been closed or waitlisted.
Do not ever worry about getting into a class, there is always a great chance you will get into the course(s) you need and want. The seminars tend to be a bit more tricky, because these courses tend to be 15 people and the more desirable courses taught by more popular professors do fill up quickly.
At orientation, just register for classes and when the quarter gets close or when it has begun, you can then switch courses, you just need to check the courses sections, they update by the second, so you will know.
Best.
One note of caution: A few incoming freshmen on another website report that they are not getting their preferred courses at orientation because, in part, they got a low enrollment lottery number at their orientation session. Also, for courses that are not a typical “Fall freshman quarter courses,” there are no seats reserved for incoming Freshmen. For example, my daughter is taking Chem. 14A in the upcoming CSI, and there are no seats (including wait list) available in the Fall quarter for Chem. 14BL. In sum, prepare to be flexible in your enrollment choices at orientation.
@Interested_Dad Yeah orientation leaders will have group members pull cards, draw sticks, etc to determine enrollment. You will get all the classes you need. But that is not the same thing as gettting the times and professors you want. If a student is flexible and has a lot of backups they should be fine. And yes for freshman only freshman classes are guaranteed to have open spots. Non first quarter freshman classes are not pre reserved as csi and fsp are not programs everyone takes so the assumption is everyone starts at step 1. There are many other classes a student can take. There is also a restriction. A max of 3 classes can be enrolled and only 2/3 can be stem. A fourth seminar can be added which is 1 unit.
@Tik1127 thanks a lot for the reassurance! was worried initially lol
