getting a name change before college starts...

hi!!! basically i am strongly considering having my name changed before I start college this fall. For as long as I could remember I've hated my name...it's a very very old ethnic Somali name that i was named after my great grandma..nobody even names their kids my name anymore. (There's probably only a handful of people with my name) ANYWAYS, I have to put up with so much **** with my name all the time. For one, people can never (yes, literally never with the exception of my family) pronounce it right and secondly, people ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS make fun of my name...even though it's expected more from little kids but still, even people my age make fun of it, laugh at it whatever AND it's associated with a certain t.v. character which makes it worse...the teasing never ends!!!! The only thing I actually like my name is that it's really 'unique' and people can almost never forget it. I also hate it b/c i feel like people can not take me as serious as they should be because of my name (not sure if it's all in my head for this one, but I'm for real).

I'm deciding to have my name changed before I start college (for obvious reasons) so it I can start on a clean slate and it will be easier for people to familiarize with my new name etc...Also, do you guys know how to get your name legally changed??! ( where, how...?).

Oh yeah, you guys can help me pick what name to decide on too if you want! :P

p.s. sorry for the rant :/

Some professors ask if you have a nickname. Just use that; no need to officially change your name.

Yea. Just like a lot of people go by their middle name instead of their first name. If you tell everyone a new name, then they will just call you that.

I wouldn’t do it if I were you. I’ve actually been considering de-Anglicizing my name. It sounds like you have a very good name, it being unique and culturally significant with family ties. You could have a nickname or a similar sounding “American” name if you wanted, but I would really advise against total assimilation.

What’s your name? Is it Borat?

That’s awesome. I wish my name was Borat.

Go with a nickname, for sure. Your name can be a novelty that you write at the top of tests and have on your drivers license. That’s what my full name is. The rest of the time I go by a nickname. Facebook, friends, and my family all call me by my nickname. Most people don’t even know it’s short for something. I actually know someone whose name was a totally normal top 20 name (it’s like the 15th most popular name for girls, or something), and in 8th grade she convinced everyone to start calling her by a totally different name (it’s not a shorter version of anything). Now, no one calls her by her real name. People don’t even associate her with it. When you get to college, just choose a new name. Introduce yourself by it, and if people who know it’s a nickname ask, tell them it’s what “everyone calls you.” Change your fb name (if you use facebook) to it, write it on all of your stuff, etc. It’ll stick. Don’t worry. No need to hassle with a bunch of legal stuff.

@everyone. thanks for the suggestions  my problem is that you can’t come up with a nickname for mmy name…so far I’ve had pol Call me "bubbles " or "bee " but srsly BC of cultural differences it’s a funny name…actually a Guy’s name with a different. Spelling (I don’t mind pming my name to y’all if you wanted to) however I do like my last name though (it’s Muslim) but it looks so mismatched w/ my first name LOL.I’m not complaining though that I’m not a shaniqua ,a sheetheed, an Obamanique lmaooo or somethiing so common and boring.
oh yeah…on Facebook I’ve kinda went over the name change limit so I can’t get it changed anymore :(

If you want to PM me your name, I could suggest nicknames or name parallels, but you really shouldn’t listen to a person you don’t know about something serious.

That said, I would again suggest against a legal name change. Maybe I’m biased because I would rather change my name to a de-Anglicized version (though that version isn’t a very good first name, so eh).

I legally changed my name before I came to college. My former first name is now my middle name, and I don’t really regret the change (especially since said name is still part of my identity).

The process will depend on your age. I think it’s easier to change your name if you’re under 18. I remember being told that if I’d been 18+, I would have had to go to court or something. In any case, you do have to get a lawyer to get your name changed. I’m sorry I can’t give you more details - my dad took care of everything, since I was under 18 at the time.

Whatever you decide to do, good luck!

I understand how you feel.
I am a male with a girl’s name (what on earth were my parents thinking?) and was teased for it, even harassed by a group of younger students once (beat the **** out of one of them and they stopped though.)
So anyway, I began college and tried to change my name. Changed it on facebook, began telling people that my name was what I tried changing it to. But almost everyone still just calls me by my original name, even the people who I introduce myself to as with the name I tried going by. So I just gave up and still go by my original name haha.
Perhaps in college people will be more mature? If all else fails, a nickname should suffice.

^If you can’t change your name on FB, legally changing your name won’t affect your FB anyway. Also, you can pm me if you like.

I’m gonna pm @BillyMc & @mathsciencedude…but would it be possible to contact fb and tell them to reset my name change limit? (well i mean it’s gotten denied so many times and didnt change but i had no idea a limit existed …i was just changing my middle name to stupid random stuff like “gotdatmajik” lmaoo).

well, I have a mutual friend with mark zuckerberg, so maybe I could pull a string or two? :stuck_out_tongue: Seriously, just email them. I mean, if it’s a legal name change they should let you.

All I know about name changes is this: there’s a kid in my school whose parents spent $500 dollars on a legal name change for him, for his birthday, from Andrew to Drew. Now, that just gets him made fun of a lot (after all, it’s pretty stupid) so make sure you REALLY need a name change before you do it because it might make you look pretty lame.
