I'm taking Intro to Philosophy and my first class is tomorrow. I found out that pratically everybody hates the professor that I'm getting. I also went to www.ratemyprofessors.com and this guy got extremely low marks, only one out of 18 students liked him. Is there any way that I could drop the course and then add it again but getting a different professor?

Does someone else teach the class?

You might try to transfer into another section taught by a different professor, but you have ask your school's registrar if that is possible. We can't answer that for you, unless someone on CC goes to your school.

Ask your school about this, not us. We won't know.

I wouldn't necessarily trust ratemyprofessors completely. My son found that sometimes teachers get a bad rating because they are have higher expectations and are actually better teachers. Some will comment badly about this type of teacher but give teachers who expect very little higher ratings because they are easier. Read between the lines.

Usually they have an "Add/Drop" period the first week or so for school. Honestly, my experiences with Ratemyprofs has been mostly accurrate, the one exception being a psychology professor everyone hated but I had a good friendship with her so I thought she was a good professor and the rest of the class didn't (they were right that she didn't have the greatest teaching style though).

Honestly, make life easy for yourself and try ratemyprofs when you're making your schedule next time, and if you think that this is a bad professor to have, switch now before it's too late. There's no point in being in a class with a professor you are already nervous about having. If you found out by word-of-mouth that this prof is bad, trust it. I wish I would've listened about one of my other professors...UGH...but that's another story.

Best of luck!

They let me do it when I was in college--no harm asking at the registrar, you could say that you heard Prof.X's approach to the topic was more focussed on your main area of interest and would be more relevant in combination with your plans for your major..just keep droning on and the registrar is likely to be pleased to get rid of you and make the switch.

I got till Jan 30th to get out of the class and get a full refund. My first day of class was today and I had him, seemed a lot nicer than others had said. I'm gonna wait a few days and see.
