Getting a rec from a coach or someone who doesnt teach at your school

I as thinking of getting a rec from the JV soccer coach. Why?, might you ask?

he would sa I have leadership abilities (I was captain and true leader of the team junior year)

he would say I woprk hard (because I really didnt work hard in school, i want to show i worked hard in something)

last and most important- he knows me pretty well, my strengths and weaknesses

is this a good idea?

BTW I am getting one rec from a teacher at my school

bump (10 char)

If the college you apply to is fine with getting a recommendation from a coach or non-academic adult, then you should turn it in. Anything for them to let them see you for who you really are is a good thing.

I am getting a rec from my varsity tennis coach because she has deep connections to the college (donations) and I have a good relationship with her.

Just make sure the college will accept it, and then you are fine.

The school I'm applying to wants one recommendation, accepts two, and frowns on three or more. I'm getting a rec from a great teacher who knows me well and who I've heard writes good recs (as in, not just 'nice kid' recs that could be for anyone but rather a real picture of the kid) and I'm happy about that. However, none of the teachers I had junior year are one's I'd want to have write me a rec - the only one I've had for multiple years is an English teacher who makes tons of grammatical errors and is generally, er, subpar. The teachers who have really known me other than the one who's writing my recommendation would have been great except that one of them retired and the other one died of a heart attack. (Isn't that horrible? He was one of my favorite teachers and such an awesome person...)

I'm also an exchange student, so I don't really have senior year teachers who could write good recs. I have been in a church choir since 4th grade, though, and the director is willing to write me a rec. I think that's better than a rec from an academic teacher who doesn't know me, right?
