What’s the best way to get a single dorm? Is there something I can do to increase my chances of getting one, other than requesting it?

i dont think so.. but i guess the college houses that offer more singles than doubles obv. increase ur chances of getting a single... like the quad.. in fisher and ware there are more singles than doubles.. double the amount.. so maybe its easier there.. but in places like hill... it might be tougher. its my guess.

just make sure singles are all of your top choices...if you want a single your first four choices should be all four freshmen based houses (quad/hill) with a single choice. That is really all you can do. Also, if you put Hill single as your top choice you are very likely to get it....would i ever recommend hill as someone's top choice....absolutely not...why you may ask....because I lived there freshmen year and the rooms suck..the ppl are cool....but the rooms are horrible!

don't get a single. The kids in singles are never as well-adjusted to Penn life.

I agree with Johnny, single may seem great now, but it can get pretty boring unless you are really social. If you want a single, try for hill, at least you get a community there too.

I love when people agree with me :D

I've lived in a double every year I've been at Penn (3 years and counting), and your roommate may become your best friend, or at least someone with whom you share a special bond (I still keep in touch with my odd Ukranian roommate from freshman year).

yeah, i still hang out with my roommate from freshmen year.

I've had the world's worst luck with roommates, which is why I want a single...

I'd say that with a single you're better off.
1. You can study in your room until as late as you want
2. You can watch TV, play music/games as loud as you want
3. You'll still socialize with people via classes, clubs, etc
4. Your roommate will probably be more of an acquaintance than a friend.

That said, it is nice to 'know' someone during NSO. I guess I'm a little different since I came into NSO knowing a little under a hundred other prefrosh. ON that note, if you can get into a pre-frosh program do it.

What do you mean by pre-frosh program?

the three prefrosh programs are:

pennacle - leadership / group dynamics
penncorp - community service
pennquest - outdoor experience

vidushi or anyone else, When you're on the housing site how do you find out how many rooms in a house are singles vs. doubles?

If you really want to guarantee your own room, try applying for places in the high rises, Gregory, DuBois or (I think?) Stouffer, where you might have suitemates but you'll have your own private space too. High rises are notoriously unsocial, but Gregory, Stouffer and DuBois all have pretty tight communities.

If you want a proper single though, well, that's entirely down to luck.

You have a good chance at a single in Stouffer. There are usually plenty of openings and that's where they put the kids who request a single in the quad and are denied.

how hard is it to get a single in the quad? anyone have one?
