Getting a summer job

My parents have told me that any and all expenses during the school year have to be paid for by me, so I need to make as much money as possible this summer. (I'm a high school grad heading off to my freshman year of college.)

Right now I have a lifeguarding job that's giving me maybe 20 hours a week. I'm looking for a part-time job that will give me at least another 20 hours, but I'm having trouble. Most places won't hire me because my schedule isn't completely flexible.

Any tips?

quit lifeguarding and work 40 hours a week elsewhere (i.e. retail [brand places like abercrombie/polo/hilfiger etc tend to pay more than big place like kohls and its more fun, so apply at one of those] )

unless you want to work at a fastfood joint, you're going to have a tough time finding a flexible schedule

I found an awesome job with flexible scheduling--you make up your own hours. I joined with Gallup, a survey interviewing call center (you've probably heard of the Gallup Poll) and it allows you to work 20-30-40 hours, depending on you, and you make your own schedule. Since it's a call center and you can make up your hours at any time, it's extremely flexible.

I suggest finding a call center within your reach and applying. But don't do it unless it's right for you. for some, it's ok, some it's awesome if you like talking on the phone and being in one setting, doing whatever you want in between calls. For others, it's horrible because they're not used to talking so much and they don't get sales.

I went to gallup and I think I'll like it when I start. I was at first working at Influent telemarketing and hated it. The atmosphere was depressing and management sucked. But Gallup's corporate culture is ranked #1. So, it really depends on the place.

Anyways, if you really really want flexible scheduling, call centers like Gallup work really well. You can google Gallup Careers to find some (i think it's www.gallup.com and you click on the link "careers")

Good luck!

btw, for the first 6 weeks, you get paid a base wage of $8.75 for working the 20 hr team. For 30/40 hour teams, it's up to 5 dollars higher than that I think (can't remember). After that, you get paid on performance...as a hint...if you're applying, I suggest exaggerating a little on the quiz you must take online. The reason why they make you take a self-assessment quiz is to find if you'd like the job to get an interview. If you don't, they won't call you. If it looks like you will, they'll schedule an interview with you. Makes sense to me. Although I didn't really have to exaggerate on the quiz cuz I like talking on the phone and all :)

I work at an independent cinema- and the main perk is that the work is mostly nights/weekends because that's when a movie theater's busiest. I dont know what lifeguarding shifts are like, but movie theater shifts are usually like 1-6 then 6-11 or so..
Good luck!
