Getting a tutor ?

How big is tutoring for the SAT? Is it common for students to get tutoring for any subjects?

Must admit I think the purpose of a tutor is to fast track the student into learning at a quicker pace.

How will a student be fast paced by a tutor? Is your concern that the student learns slowly or has had difficulty learning throughout high school? I think you need to tell the prospective tutor what you want and why. I am not seeing how tutoring will help a student who is somehow lagging in high school to learn whatever is lacking on a test that measures academic competency across high school.

I am a tutor myself and I can see the benefits it has in helping students who are motivated. I agree with you zannah in regards to students who are lagging behind in high school.

I definitely agree that you get what you pay for when it comes to this area.

@Mmom218 what would be a rate for a reasonable tutor? Range wise? I have heard of some ridiculous rates mentioned

@angesangles we paid $135/hour for my daughter’s ACT tutor. Well worth it. She improved by 6 points over two months.

I myself am a tutor for IB maths in Australia. Am thinking of expanding my tutoring network into the USA. I have managed to get 800 on the Math SAT II exams from trials and just recently sat the exam in June.

Is there a heavy demand for maths tutors in America? what regions in particular pay the most?

@angesangles big cities like LA and New York City pay the most. Also, the tutor we used came from a well-established tutoring company. For a tutor not from an established company the rate would probably be less.

Would a graduate from Sydney University or Melbourne University with a maths degree be sort after over there?

Can only speak from experience but the bigger the city, the more demand for tutoring. Is there any reputable tutoring website where you can advertise?

We have a reliable webpage in Australia, www.tutorfinder.com.au where you can list down your tutoring profile.

Paying $60/hr in NJ for SAT math, and half of that for three kids together.

D said she could tell the difference on the last SAT after a couple months of combo of group and individual tutoring sessions. She went through problems on her own between sessions and used the individual sessions very strategically.

They are definitely popular but not absolutely necessary.
