Getting a TV as a gift, but is it right?

Basically a relative who owns a TV business is going to give me a TV, whatever I want. I was thinking though, I'm going to college next year, so the TV wont' be of any use because it would be too big to bring in and look over. Maybe I could wait until I go to college and then get a high quality 30" TV in a dorm I'll be in for 4 years?

I would only have it for a year, and it's really tempting to have some 52" LCD in my room, but should I just get a good 30" TV(really good quality instead of some $300 monitor) and wait it out? What type of TV could I bring into a dorm? For those who are in one, what's usually the max TV you would want to bring in?

I think that the 52" is greedy. I'd just get a nicer one that can be used for college. I know that a 28" LCD one is too big for the dorms I'll be in because it is so wide that it can't fit in the cabinet.

A year is a long time, but 4 is an eternity, so I think I will just get a good long term monitor for college. I plan to use it as my laptop monitor a lot and maybe bring in my Xbox 360, but are there cable slots by any chance in dorms? Not that I plan on just using the TV a lot in college because I know that studies are more important, but I do have a few shows that I've been watching for a few years now(ie. Lost).

Mine has cable, but some places charge you an outrageous amount to get it.

you won't spend 4 years in a dorm. Unless you are crazy...

I'm going with a 32" for college, its a good size and probably the limit for a dorm.

I have a 38" for my dorm

Yeah definitely wait till you get to the dorm. A 30" won't necessarily be easy to carry around, but a 40" would just be too much in many cases.

For college, I'd try to keep it under 28". I'll probably take a 13" when I go.

Double post...sorry.

I'd stick with less than a 26" for college. THe bigger it is, the better the chances of it being stolen or damaged. And, you won't be able to mount the tv onto a wall (if it's a plasma) unless you want to fork over your housing deposit to "repair" the wall on which you mounted it.

Get a 30" LCD Computer monitor.

112'' LCD widescreen

im debating as well if I should bring mine. I bought a 42in plasma over the summer, and dont want to part lol. I also have a 360, wii, and ps3. I'm nervous about taking these because I dont want them to get stolen, when im away on break or go home for a weekend.

Dont bring a relatively expensive and flashy tv because it makes you a target for theft. I personally have a 42" LCD tv in my room (:P) but I am bringing a small 26" LCD. Still it might get stolen. I ll be back for my 42" after I graduate

Man, I dont know if I can do without. Hugh movie buff, cant stand thought of having my hd baby lol.
