I will be applying this fall for ucla as a history major. 3.5 GPA TAP. I"m taking my last preq right now and i'm at a borderline A/B. I have heard that a couple w's won't hurt your chances, but does that change if it's a prereq? I have 2 w's, if i take this class in the summer instead and take a w will it affect my chances for UCLA? Responses are appreciated. :)

not sure if I’m misunderstanding…but…:):):)

you’re taking the last pre req right now and you will either obtain an A or B in it…but you are thinking about taking a W…is that the gist of it??

your spring grades don’t count…admissions doesn’t factor that pre req into your decision…get the A or B and start your GPA over at the UC you go to.

if you drop out w/ a ‘W’, you might get your admission rescinded

W T F…i still don’t get it…you say you have an A/B in the class why would you want to drop it

No i haven’t applied yet. I’m applying for fall '10. I’m just contemplating if it would be better to at worst get a B making my GPA a 3.4. Or to obtain an extra w, which would make 3 total and get a 3.5 by getting an A in the summer.

take the B

i got a W in real analysis and i applied for math major at ucla and ucb. now i’m regretting it. while real analysis is considered the ultimate foundational/difficult ugrad (and grad for that matter) math class, i would have gotten a B, and that was a dumb reason to drop. berk would have been impressed that i finished real analysis as a sophomore.now they see a W. ughhhh.

oic…that’s kindof a toughie

i applied this yr and seeing how much it really comes down to GPA I wish I could get back the one non A grade I have…i dunno, either way you’re rolling the dice…

but one way you can stay safe is to just get the damn A in the class…there’s still over 6 more weeks of classes…try to pull the A so you don’t have to stress about what you could have done or worry about how the 3 W’s will affect your admission

I would stay in the class and kick ass from tonight on…risk getting a B instead of dropping out ----my opinion

You should definitely NOT take that W.

Well you’re still between A/B, so why not work harder and get that A?

I like the GI bill…but how did that get worked into the convo?

Sorry, I totally posted that in the wrong thread.

Thanks for the replies and how the hell did the GI Bill come into this convo?..lol

Yeah the GI Bill reference was a misplaced post…let me fix that.

See the following thread: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/uc-transfers/694802-those-you-who-worried-about-ws.html

I transferred out with over five W’s – several in prerequisite courses. (I’m sure there were more, but I don’t want to guess incorrectly.) I’m not sure why people are so adamant against taking a W.

I’d say it would depend on how confident you are about getting an A the second time around, since your rationale is to boost your GPA. It’s been a while, but I believe UCLA TAP still has some sort of GPA cutoff, so I can understand why you’d do this.

Do yourself a favor and earn the A. You might regret it if you don’t when it comes time for grad school.
