Getting Accepted into a major

I'm going to apply for pre-med for the class of 2012 :D
When adcoms look at the major and decide if they're gonna let me in for the major, do they look at my SATIIs, APs, ECs, and other stuff regarding the intended field, or do they just look at the GPA and SAT/ACT mostly.?

For example, I'm applying to premed, so when the adcoms see if they will give me a spot in the pre-med track, will they MAINLY look at my AP Bio Score, my Bio SATII score, how many medical activities I've done, a good recommnedation by my bio teacher, etc.?

I kind of want to know the answer to this, my dad thinks I'll have an easier time getting into college because ChemE is a hard major that "nobody" applies to!

OP, do you plane on doing one of the combined 7-8 year BA/MD programs, such as Brown PLME, Northwestern, etc? If that is what you mean, then they will definitely be looking for a passion for medicine. However, these programs are highly selective, and you must have outstanding stats all around.

However, if you are applying to regular colleges and just plan to go pre-med, they will be evaluating your application overall just like any other applicant. Pre-med is not a "program" at any college I'm aware of. At most, it isn't even a major. In order to go to med school, you simply have to take certain classes that the schools require, and this can be done within any major you want, although it is perhaps easier in a major such as bio. Even if your college has a pre-med major, and you wish to take that route, you will not be applying for the major, just applying for the college. Colleges like to see passion, and if your passion is medicine, that's great...but it really could be anything.

I'm not sure I've exactly answered your question, but I hope I was somewhat helpful...

Pinnipotto, I won't be applying for the short route to complete medicine, or whatever that is. Just the normal 4 years of "premed" and then 4 years of med school after having taken the MCATs.

So you are saying that my major won't play a big factor in my admissions process? Thanks for the response, btw. It helped lots :)

^At a UC or a larger state school, it might, as they could want to balance the percentage of majors.

But otherwise...they really could care less. If you can't do the work in college, you'll be forced to drop from the track.
