I'm a high school junior from Michigan. I really want to do the High School Honors Science Program (HSHSP) at Michigan State University this summer. However, I heard that it is pretty selective. My science and math course grades up to this year aren't exactly stellar, though, so I'm wondering if I should both applying (24 people are chosen, and apparently the acceptance rate is around 20%). My ACT score is a 31 (33 M 34 W 29 R 28 S) and my SAT is a 2030 (760 M 690 W 580 CR). I love math and physics, especially, though, and I'm a good writer, so I'm wondering if I have a chance, provided that I write convincing essays. There's no spot to explicitly state ECs (however, I could probably mention I'm in Robotics in the essay). Should I bother?

If you don’t try you’ll never know. And try to write stellar essays!

I got a C+ and a B- in Biology freshman year. Does that automatically DQ me?

HSHSP’s deadline passed over one week ago. I wouldn’t really spend time bothering now …

The director said if I get them in by Weds. she’ll take it. But am I not really qualified?

You can’t win if you don’t play … wait, that’s the lotto’s tag line. There is no try; either do or don’t … wait, that’s a Yoda line.

Let them DQ you … don’t DQ yourself.

Yeah but I don’t wanna go to all the trouble if my bad freshman year math & science grades already keep me outta the running. I mean, having teachers go to the trouble of writing me rec letters and all…

Teachers writing recs by Wednesday? Uh, good luck. I asked mine to write a rec a week before it was due for another program and they weren’t very happy. I gave my counselor all of spring break and another week, and she forgot to do it. Lol.

I don’t think I’m gonna apply anyway. For all the trouble it’s worth (and the $3,300 price tag doesn’t help), I’d rather spend the summer with friends/family, on vacation for part of it, swimming, doing some community service I’m passion8 about, and going to journalism camp that I’d otherwise miss. :)
