SBU is literally my dream school, where I can take the classes I need for the MCAT and medical school. It would be an honor to get in, but I fear my past is haunting me, right now I’m a senior and my GPA is a 2.7, my 10th grade having an average of around 3.5 and my 11th grade an average of 4.0. I will make it to 2.9 by January if I receive A+s in my classes. During my sophomore year I was dealing with depression, loss of a parent and issues with my self image. so unfortunately my grades were around a 65-70. Everyday I try to make up for my grades but I fear that even with perfect grades I wont reach SBU’S average of 3.5. I’ve taken 4 a.p classes, and 2 college now classes. My SAT is 1250, I am waiting for my October results and I’m taking it again in November where I know I will break that 1300+ threshold. I love volunteering around the school, painting the school bathroom, hosting high school fairs, interning for teachers, and participating in my schools social justice club where we fight for the rights of everyone and for respect for those usually targeted by bullying. Please let me know if I would even be considered into SBU, because I know I have a lot to offer; I would also like to know if there is anything I can do to increase my chances of getting accepted.
Please remember that it’s not just your grades that are part of your application for SBU. They do take into account your personal statement, supplements - if you’re applying to any programs such as their Honors College, ECs, internships, RECs, etc. If I can recall, SBU’s average GPA is a 3.7 (90%) but I know someone who got in with a 3.0 GPA. Also, your GPA is around the middle for their standards. I’d say to definitely keep volunteering and doing things outside of school, try to find internships that can tie in with your intended major, build relationships with teachers so they can write you amazing RECs, etc.
If you know you have a lot to offer - go apply to one of their programs. I suggest looking into their University Scholars program, mainly because it’s easier to get into COMPARED to their other programs (more seats). Their supplemental essays prompts will usually ask what you can bring to their campus - that’s your chance to prove what you said.
The admissions are not going to look at your application and just throw it away if they see your GPA - that just wouldn’t be fair.
SBU is a pretty competitive school but don’t beat yourself up if you don’t get in. You can always attend a CC and just transfer - they won’t look at your SAT or HS scores if you take that route.
Sorry, I had a typo. I mean to say your SAT score is around the middle for their academic standard.
