Getting Accepted...

I'm a junior at this moment, but I'm already looking into the colleges that I plan on applying to and Notre Dame is one of my top choices. The only thing is, I'm worried if I would be accepted or not. It's early for me to worry about this - but I really want to have a good chance of being able to go to ND.

My year, is really smart, the class of 2009 at my school.
The chances of me being in top 10% is really slim, but I am sure that I will be in top 25%.
I've taken my SATs, but I'm going to retake it to get a better score.
I plan on taking SATII Chinese and the ACT as well.

I checked out on Collegeboard to see what is important to ND, and I found that volunteer work , and talent/ability is something they look into.
I have over a good three hundred hours of community service, and I've been in art for about six years, and two years in AP art.

I guess, long story short, I'm just worried about the class rank, and the rigor of the school record, SAT, ACT... etc.

Can someone tell me what to expect from ND, having been accepted/going to it?

Uh, I forgot to add on that I plan to become an art major if I were to get accepted into ND - but I might double major (I don't know yet) - but, perhaps some of the art majors on here could give me some heads up?

Class rigor is pretty important too- and a sport would definantly help

Well, I'm pretty sure that not everyone at ND plays a sport. I don't play sports - I'm not a sports person. However, I did play soccer up until the ninth grade - I think - but that wasn't for the school team.

As for class rigor - I have majority Honours, Advanced, and AP credits.

You're right, not everyone played a sport. But a very strong majority has. Something close to around 80%

84% last year

But that doesn't quite answer my question.. I'm not asking about the sports or what sports I should take to get me into ND...

Depends on your school. ND will take your rank in context of your school...ie if you're in the top 25% at a school like Andover, then that's a good rank....while top 25% at your neighborhood public school is not considered competitive for top colleges. But, there are definitely kids who get accepted without being in the top 10% of their class! The only way to be sure you won't get in is not to apply!!

By the way, me and 2 other kids at my school were accepted to ND early action; none of us are athletes...guess we're in the minority!

At this point, it's probably an advantage not to play a sport in hs lol. If 84% of the people applying hold a varsity letter, it's just evens the playing field further, allowing the all-state vocalist, drum-line leader, etc., to stand out. Unless you've captained a ton of teams, etc., it just looks like another applicant to ND.

ND likes to see students who are involved. In a lot of cases, that means sports, but it doesn't have to be. If you are involved in choir, newspaper, student gov, etc it is just as good. Being an athlete (unless you are recruited) won't help or hurt you.

Yeah.

I'm involved in the National Art Honours Society - I've been in art for four years now. I've been an officer in that club, as well, as an officer in another club. I guess, I'm in quite a lot of clubs at school, I help out with the concessions when there are competitions held at school, etc.

I have over 300 community hours - and I really do hope that it'll help me get in, 'cause I do a lot to contribute to the community.

My year is very competitive, so my chances are that I'll be in the top 20% or top 25%.

My son applied to ND for the 2007-2008 freshman class. We thought his HS record was reasonably impressive:

Graduated in the top 5% of a very competitive suburban NE high school.

SAT score of about 2000, stronger in math than writing; perfect scores on physics and calculus SAT IIs

AP Physics, Calculus, Statistics, Government, Computers

National Merit Commended Student

Eagle Scout (so plenty of community service); Brotherhood member OA

Student Council, NHS, significant church volunteer involvement

Webmaster for a variety of school clubs/interest groups

Only male on the Dance Team

Member of Chamber Singer ensemble; regular roles in community and high school theater; starred in spring musical his senior year

15 hour/week job junior/senior year

He was wait-listed at ND… and both of his parents are ND alum. We figure that one has to already have founded a homeless shelter in Haiti or play football to be accepted at ND. Luckily, he only applied to see if he could get in, as ND didn’t even offer the majors he wanted to study.

Good Luck.

There is no calculus SAT II.
But I'm surprised that an Eagle Scout with that kind of a record wouldn't get into Notre Dame. What was his SAT score out of 1600?

As great as it is to see a parent brag about their child - I don't see the point in typing that out - it doesn't answer my questions.

My mistake (having trouble remembering all the tests): it was SAT II Mathematics Level II. SAT out 1600 was 1310.

Veeveeyan, you asked about your chances...just thought I would give you a comparison, with the stats of someone who did not get in.

we went with DS to a recruitment night, in our area it is invite only. archiemom was right to give you stats, they will give you the stats...forget about applying if your ACT is less then 30 (their avg is 31). SAT avg is 1340. We walked away floored by how high their standards were. Remember if their avg is 1340, you better have a lot of EC's if you are lower. You are a jr. listen to these people, your resume will be your make or break, it is not only about your gpa, it is about the whole person.

Looking at the fact that you are not in the top 10-15%, than you need something similiar to this:

Eagle Scout

Our Ds does not know yet if he was accepted, but to follow with archie I think you need to see your comp.

DS has
1390 SAT out of 1600 (ND does not look at written)
33 ACT
4 APs (US Hist, Gov, Eng, Euro Hist)
NHS since 10th

All of that info was what was submitted

Not meaning to discourage or inflame, just wanting you to get a view of the type of applicant
