Getting an Open 6th a good idea?

Is getting a 6th period free a good idea for my senior year of high school? I had a few teachers say that if you plan on college you shouldn't get it. However, my school offer no classes that I could take 6th period that interst me (no ap courses).
So far my classes are:
AP Gov/Econ
IB English Hl2
IB History of the Americans HL2
Ap Clac
Sociology/Psychology

I would try and get IB Physis or Geography but they are the same periods as my ap gov class
Im not sure if this might effect anything but my gpa is not the best either (3.3-3.5ish)

You have 5 solid classes. However, a STUDENT would take another class for 6th period. So if you are applying to a highly competitive college they do not want to see that you went home for 6th period. Going to a job is okay.

I would take an elective that is of some interest. That’s what learning is all about. it does not have to brutal class-- it can be a life skill…

I wouldnt because your gpa isn’t in the super elite zone for the highly competitive colleges, so I assume those aren’t your goals. Instead, I would just take the five and do my absolute best to pull all As. This would work better for a mid-year report.

I’m offended at the advice you’ve received from livesinnewjersey. How dare you bring shame to the great state of NJ (which I happen to call my home as well)!

a STUDENT, an INTELLECTUAL, but more importantly a DISCERNING INDIVIDUAL would come to the realization that unless you are dead set on going to Harvard or Yale, taking a free period with a really hard schedule will do a lot of good for your health, productivity and sanity.

I feel like livesinnewjersey will be the kind of person that will frown upon people that work hard at their company but OMG actually uses vacation days to relax and soothe the mind. Not trying to be vitriolic, I’m just really disappointed that you really believe in that advice.

Even Harvard and Yale don’t care if you do 5 vs. 6 classes: The important thing to them, and everyone else, is what you are doing with your extra time. If you leave school early because you have a job, need to look after siblings at home, are heading to your internship, or are tending to your on-line company, neither they nor anyone else will object.

How would they know what you do with your 6th period?..

And all the things about going home is probably unlikely. Would they leave for a little and come back for 7th and 8th

^ I think the OP can leave school after the 5th. Meaning 6th is probably her last class. Either that or you go to school later.
