I'll be moving into my apartment next week but I live on the east coast so I've had no chance of going there beforehand and getting furniture. What's the best way to get a bed? If I go on craigslist or something, how am I supposed to transport a bedframe and mattress to my apartment?

Craigslist is easily your best bet if you don't want to pay retail for furniture, but you could also hit up some of the thrift stores in the area. The problem of transportation is a big one, though.

You can rent ZipCars here (or any other brand -- just the idea of a car you can rent hourly/daily as an 18+ year old), and that might be how you'll do it. If you go through Craigslist, sometimes you can pay a small fee over the cost of the item and they'll help you move it (usually you would have to ask).

If you are that worried about it, it might be a good idea to buy retail and pay for delivery service, particularly for big items like the bedframe + mattress and any big desks or bookcases or such. There is a "Scandinavian Design" in Downtown Berkeley that has reasonable prices (it's kind of like an upscale IKEA, or you could just shop IKEA by internet/catalogue).

I would suggest Ikea in Emoryville. You can take the BART over there easily and pick out whatever you want. They will deliver it to your door for $75.00. Be careful about picking up any used matresses... last year there were bed bug outbreaks at several colleges and surrounding areas. (My friend's son had to leave his dorm in So. Cal last fall!) Or, if you do buy on Craig's list, make sure the furniture is not contaminated.

I thought you had to be 21 to use zipcar? Has anyone used it who isn't 21?

Are zipcars just your regular size cars? If so, how would I transport a mattress? The only way I see possible is if I rent a moving truck or something...

How is everybody else moving mattresses into their apartments (if you're not getting it delivered)?

yo phroz3n, i've got a proposition for you.

i'm 21 and in san jose, moving into my apart in berkeley next week also. i'll be renting a truck from home depot or somehwere (i think its like $30 one day, unlimited miles, just return with full tank).

we'll split the cost, you help me move, and i'll help you move.
