So on a typical weekend, how accessible is the city. I understand that other than the bus, there are not many immediate ways to get around to the city (Hollywood/Sunset Blvd.) How would I be able to get around? I heard that they have a bus system that takes students to the nearest subway station. If this is true how often and when does it run?

u will need a car imo. my roommate tried to use the bus but it wasnt very effective

you will go places in your friends’ cars and help out with the gas and parking

I think a freshman can do just fine without a car. My son had all sorts of interesting adventures trying to take the bus to various places. He used zipcar. He rode with friends. We let him take a car to USC for his second year, because he needed to be on film sets in remote areas in the middle of the night. But he still has loads of friends who are carless, and survive by using these alternatives.

It worries me, too. I can’t even drive yet by myself and I’ve been going on vacation to LA for 10 years. It seems to me that a car is an absolute necessity

A train stop is being built right now on the Southern edge of Campus.

Ultimately there will be train stops at 3 of the 4 corners of the campus.

Expanding on what I wrote earlier, there are so many students with cars that not having one is hardly ever a concern. This is because there are a lot of Calfornia kids that go to USC (I know, surprising), and it is more convenient for their families for the student to have a car on campus to drive back and forth to home weekends and holidays. So your friends who want to go somewhere will almost always include someone who is willing to drive, but who will be tight on cash like all students and happy to have you chip in on gas and parking. So if you are from out of state or just don’t have a car, don’t worry about it, and for sure don’t bring a car if you wouldn’t otherwise just to have one to run errands.

There is the #81 LADOT bus that runs on Fig on the eastern edge of the campus that heads downtown. Also make sure to check the F line of the Dash bus which runs all around campus before heading back downtown to the metro stops and the new Ralphs grocery store.

The Dash runs every 10 minutes from 6:30am-6:30pm and has stops all around campus too.
