I remember when I went up there for the football championship pep rally a lot of kids were getting around on mopeds. How well do these work out? Can you park them where kids park bikes? Is it completely useless to have a car and a motor-scooter type thing? I'm bringing my car next year, and most likely a bike, but I just saw Reign Over Me, and I have to admit, it would be a lot of fun to drive a little motor something around campus, haha. Are they street legal? If so, can they be operated on the sidewalks too?

Just planning out next year... So excited :).

im selling my car (handing over the title may 20th) and im going to uf without a vehicle. i am, however, buying a motorcycle when i get there behind my parents' backs. motorcycle can be parked right outside dorms and buildings, making it perfect

A lot of my friends have bikes/mopeds/motorcycles up in Gainesville. They are perfectly permitted, the only thing they say to watch out for is that even bikes have to follow traffic laws according to state law. Apparently cops have pulled over kids on bikes for going over speed limit (which is by no means hard throughout most of campus) or running stop signs.

All the rest of my friends have their cars up there. Since you live pretty close, some sort of vehicle is highly suggested. Parking can be a nightmare, and if you find a good spot, you won't find yourself moving your car for weeks on end.

The bus system is highly efficient up there, takes you to basically anywhere in Gainesville, on or off campus, even late through the night. Because of the horrendous parking for freshmen and sophomores, kids living on and off-campus find themselves using the bus system to get to and from classes, the cafeteria, gym, etc.

On gameday, traffic gets VERY bad, as in complete grid-lock before and after the game. My friend lives 10 minutes away from the stadium with normal traffic, but on game day it takes him and hour to two hours to get home.

I would recommend against getting the Moped, I'm not sure on their exact parking policy, but a bike is good, and the bus is also good. Most kids thought they would ride to class everyday on their bike, but then find themselves riding the bus across campus. Bike/car/bus system will be all you will need up there.

They're designated places in a parking lot where you can park your moped. Think of mopeds just like motorcyles: have to have a decal, cant drive on sidewalks, obey normal traffic rules. If you do decide to bring your car, I would just bring a bike. Dont spend extra money for decals and such for two vehicles. I always wanted to drive a moped but I feel I'm going to treat it like a bike which might not be a good thing. :)

The bus system is not highly efficient, a lot of the routes are terrible. It's good for getting to campus and back and that's pretty much it - some stops have problems with full buses too. Sometimes you can get downtown and back at night, but it's usually really crowded.

Yea..no one at the bus stop would take their eyes off of it. What was real funny was that it took her a while to actually stop; when the officer decided to turn on the sirens.

I think the vicious hatred thing is because while in a car you think there's an empty parking spot and just as you're pulling into it you realize that there's already a moped there. I'd never vandalize one but I can sort of see how people would - that can inspire a rageeeeeeeee in you hahaha

Yea, but it really doesn't make sense for a moped driver to take a parking spot. There are designated areas for mopeds/sports bikes to park, all throughout campus. Whoever does that is just a jackass.

Yes they are!! I remember I thought there was an empty parking spot, and sure enough it was a moped in it. This is at the parking lot in front of hume and behind flavet field. Anyone who parks there knows how much this is a hassle, just like every other parking lot.
